Michele Bachmann is on the defensive about comments she made earlier this week suggesting that a vaccine against a virus linked to cervical cancer poses a danger to young girls.
"During the debate, I didn't make any statements that would indicate that I'm a doctor, I'm a scientist or that I'm making any conclusions about the drug one way or another," the GOP presidential hopeful told reporters here who questioned her about the story she told suggesting that the vaccine had caused mental retardation. Asked whether she would apologize for comments that outraged medical experts say will discourage parents from getting their children immunized, Bachmann said: "Oh, I'm not going to answer that."
During the Republican debate Bachmann attacked her rival Rick Perry for mandating vaccinations against the human papillomavirus vaccine (HPV) for Texas school girls - a decision that the Texas legislature later overruled.
"To have innocent little 12-year-old girls be forced to have a government injection through an executive order is just flat out wrong," she said during the debate.
After the debate, Bachmann took her critique a step further, describing in several television interviews how a tearful mother had approached her after the debate saying that her daughter "suffered mental retardation" as a result of the vaccine.

Further..... when the hair is all gone and the pink shows, it is time to stop beating a dead horse
Free Republic is going to be a very sad place when the delusion of acandidacy Palin finally sinks in.
Those many were wrong. We don't have to worry about being wrong with hucksters like Mercola. His website is a testament to scaremongering, junk science and the fact that you don't have to know what you're talking about to appear to know what you're talking about.
You'd have a much better chance of staying healthy if you were to ignore everything Mercola says.
Research Shank3 and scaffolding proteins.
I would bet “dollars to donuts” that Bachmann didn’t know what guardasil was 24 months ago. Further all the “talking heads” here on FR who express such strong feelings about it probably didn’t know what it was 6 months ago unless they were from Texas! I’m constantly amused of the FReepers who say my daughters don’t need it because they are pure......sure they are. I went to my Grandson’s 7th Grade Football game last week and set amongst those 11 and 12 year olds.... Pure..oh you bet..... The only way you can be sure that your daughter won’t be a candidate for cervical cancer is if you put her in a cage or she’s so fat and ugly that she will have to sneak up on a mirror and no one will be tempted......well I guess that’s no guarantee either....having been to Walmart!
That can read into her remarks, but what she said about Perry was true.
Bachmann accused Perry of mandating Gardasil because his former top aide was a lobbyist for Merck, which manufactures the vaccine.
http://www.politicususa.com/en/palin-bachmann-perry-gardasilBACHMANN: What I'm saying is that it's wrong for a drug company, because the governor's former chief of staff was the chief lobbyist for this drug company. The drug company gave thousands of dollars in political donations to the governor, and this is just flat-out wrong. The question is, is it about life, or was it about millions of dollars and potentially billions for a drug company?

Depends on how closely they follow the news. Those in Virginia and Washington, DC are under government-mandated orders to vaccinate, too.
For whatever reason the company decided Gardasil would be a hard sell ~ there'd be resistance to any new drug that targeted vaginas ~ so they'd need help.
The first guy hit up by the sales rep was his ol'bud Perry. The sales pitch worked and Perry hopped on board to push the vaccinations.
I would imagine the sales rep was just amazed ~ his first sale and he'd made it all the way to the top with an executive order and everything.
subsequent sales were a little tougher but the sales rep at some point realized there was no sales resistance ~ America was not, after all, the main floor of a mosque where no woman is allowed to walk lest the floor see her nether regions and quake.
I think an idiot could have figured that out, but this guys boss was a marketing manager. While worrying about the worst that can happen they are always scheming to cut the sales forces' commissions just in case it's a hit!
When everything was all over Merck is making no more money on Gardasil than it would have made without a marketing campaign Merck realizes that the whole deal backfired because NOW THEY ARE PART OF A PARTISAN POLITICAL CAMPAIGN.
The marketing director is wondering if he'll have to sit down and have a beer with Obama ~
You think sophisticated compounds designed to fight complex diseases are analogous in any way to dietary supplements? Dear lord. You think the pharmaceutical companies want to deny you access to vitamin C because it competes with the products they manufacture? Well, that's just nuts. Maybe Ron Paul should be your candidate.
If it's genital the Obots are on top of it doncha know.
Not sure where you're coming up with that information. You obviously have never been around a child who has autism. And I think in a few years a lot of people will be surprised at how "organic" this condition really is... a lot of studies are being done about mitochondrial dysfunction, which is becoming apparent in a whole host of "imaginary" diseases such as autism, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome and even Alzheimer's. They are now coming up with tests that can prove mitochondrial slowdown as well as cell-free DNA, which proves these are serious organic disorders and not "money-making scams."
If you see nothing wrong with this statement by Bachmann then there is nothing I can do to convince you otherwise. To people who value objectivity, and reject guilt by association, this is just another example of why Bachmann isn't ready for prime time. Bachmann's brainless statement is akin to liberals claiming that their whacko allies are only speaking truth to power. Some people formulate opinions and make decisions based on emotion. Others choose to come to conclusions based on facts. Clearly, Bachmann is in the former camp and is about as uninformed as a person can be about this particular vaccine (and about Perry's motivations). Unfortunately, those facts didn't stop her from keeping her mouth shut and being thought a fool instead of running it mindlessly and removing all doubt.
I can't get my mind around this because I just can't believe it's become this bad. Gardasil is a landmark drug and will prove to be one of the most important drug discoveries of the decade. I'll take the endorsement of the top Oncologists and the top cancer research and treatment hospitals in the world over a candidate for president trying to score cheap political points. Luddites are everywhere.
This debate reminds me of the precautionary principle. In school, this was defined as the view that the absence of evidence is not the same as absence of risk. The proponents of this principle can't argue the evidence (because there is none to support them) but claim we should follow their policy prescriptions anyway. To them, if their fears and phobias are right, they are right. Even if they are wrong, they are right. As with many anti-science and anti-technology phobias, this principle (and its advocates) would have us ignore the benefits derived from using a particular technology. In this case, the Luddites want us to grant legitimacy to the belief that scientifically unwarranted concerns over alleged side effects take absolute precedence over providing a population with the means to protect itself from an aggressive and deadly cancer.
I agree that this vaccine shouldn't be mandatory. I disagree entirely with those who would try and present Gardasil as anything other than one of the most important advances in the history of medicine. After listening to the people who understand this subject and know what the hell they're talking about, I fully understand why Perry did what he did. He did the wrong thing for the right reasons.
The more I learn about what 11 and 12 year olds are doing these days, the more I realize how important drugs like this will become. Or, I could just put my head in the sand and stay out of Wal-Mart. :^)
You guys continue making things up as you go to deliver the desired narrative.
More than 40 million doses of Gardasil have been delivered around the world. Yeah, it's really been a "hard sell." Yeah, they really need some help.
The only help I see in demand is for someone to help you find something legitimate to bash Perry for, because this ain't it.
Well, that’s the biggest bunch of bull crap I’ve ever heard. If the state of Texas is soooooooooooo concerned about healthcare costs, how about stop giving free healthcare to illegals. That’s a start. That line about healthcare is a laughable joke. Especially when the Perry camp tries to issue it. They are not IN THE LEAST concerned about healthcare costs. They prove it by forcing hospitals to treat illegals for non life threatening issues and not requiring the hospital to report illegals who come in....and giving them state version of “medicaid”.....so, Perry & Co. need to come up with a new line, cause that one doesn’t fly.
Go get your genes fixed please, then report back with something meaningful.
You are a jerk. Don’t assume anything.
I’ve known about gardisil for years, and I even know how to spell it. Since you don’t know how to spell it, I wonder what you really know about it.
I have 14 year old twin girls, and one of them has a seizure disorder. I research every vaccine to see if seizures are a side-effect to determine if she should have it or not.
My daughters are pure!!! They go to a Christian school. They are very modest and won’t even wear 2 piece bathing suits. They are cute too. They haven’t had boyfriends yet. They haven’t even gone on a date. One of them just hangs out with her girlfriends. She’s very shy. The other one has guy friends.
I’ve talked to them both about gardisil. They know they need it before them become sexually active, and they know that I am hoping that will be after they are 18 years old.
I should add that we are not sure if one of my daughters will take the shot because of her seizure disorder. I’m pretty sure the other one will take it.
Oh for Pete's Sake!!! Stop it with the liberal tactics. If I don't want my daughter to have some stupid vaccine that means I want her to die of cancer???
I want some solid evidence that shows that the girls who have been vaccinated with Gardisil have a markedly lower incidence of cervical cancer. The vaccine only is effective on 4 or 5 strains of HPV and there are hundreds of strains and only a very small number lead to cervical cancer.
The issue isn't really about Gardisil, it's about the thought processes of someone in a position of power believing he has the right to force something on the rest of us. The fact that Gov. Perry entertained the thought and defended it and fought for it makes me really nervous. Anyone with the "for the Greater Good" attitude scares the crap out of me.
Forty Million? Wow, you think that would be enough to determine the effectiveness. Do you know of any studies that show a correlation between women who got the vaccine and those who didn't and the rate of cervical cancer acquired?
Oh - kinda like those that claim that if you don't have your young daughters immunized with Gardisil you are risking their lives or you want them to get cancer? Kinda like that?
