No apologies: Bachmann defends HPV remarks
CBS "News" ^ | 15 Sep 2011 | Sarah Huisenga

Michele Bachmann is on the defensive about comments she made earlier this week suggesting that a vaccine against a virus linked to cervical cancer poses a danger to young girls.

"During the debate, I didn't make any statements that would indicate that I'm a doctor, I'm a scientist or that I'm making any conclusions about the drug one way or another," the GOP presidential hopeful told reporters here who questioned her about the story she told suggesting that the vaccine had caused mental retardation. Asked whether she would apologize for comments that outraged medical experts say will discourage parents from getting their children immunized, Bachmann said: "Oh, I'm not going to answer that."

During the Republican debate Bachmann attacked her rival Rick Perry for mandating vaccinations against the human papillomavirus vaccine (HPV) for Texas school girls - a decision that the Texas legislature later overruled.

"To have innocent little 12-year-old girls be forced to have a government injection through an executive order is just flat out wrong," she said during the debate.

After the debate, Bachmann took her critique a step further, describing in several television interviews how a tearful mother had approached her after the debate saying that her daughter "suffered mental retardation" as a result of the vaccine.

Actually, Mercola’s products are very well sourced and high quality. What is wrong with making some money for a good product? He does give out free information. Are not we all for free enterprise and capitalism?

He represents and supplies a good service. We should be grateful. Typical responses to truth, is shameful.

Have a great day!

Stay strong and in Great Health..

You didn't find a scientific study ~ you found political commentary about a statement. Your first four references are THE WASHINGTON POST.

Just exactly how valid do you imagine a Post story is going to be?

I showed you Merck's own scientific study (required for FDA approval BTW) and you comeback with BS?

Were the children informed of the risk?

My wife and I made these types of decisions for our children.

Hasn’t this vaccine actually killed girls?

Wow, he received money from Merck prior to 2007?.....and he didn't deliver on his commitment to make Gardasil mandatory? They're not getting much for their money now, are they?

Merck even gave him more money for his 2010 campaign after being burned by Governor Perry on Gardasil. Why does Merck, a jilted crony, continue donating? Merck got nothing for their $23,500 contribution prior to Perry dropping the mandate. What do you tin foilers speculate Merck is getting for their $5,000? I'll bet it something really big this time. You'd think they'd have more leverage, or at least something to show for their money, after contributing a whopping $28,500 out of the tens of millions he had to raise over that same time period.

At some point you conspiracy theorists are going to have to list all of the campaign contributions Perry received from Merck and then show us the quid pro quo. Of course, you can't do it, because it doesn't exist, but that won't stop you from trying to create a direct correlation via innuendo. It's an intellectually weak argument, some might even call it vapid, but here you are working your hardest to push the dishonesty. What a waste of time.

Well, you said they had nothing to gain and inferred they were independent doctors/researchers. I don’t think that’s the case. The site is a sales vehicle for his products.

I have no problem with anyone selling a product, or believing in Mercola. I don’t and look to other sources with more independence on the matter.

thanks for your reply.

Well the headaches are a concern to me also, and the seizures are a huge concern.

One of my 14 year old daughters has a brain injury and seizures.

She is very sensitive to medications. Even Nasonex nose spray gives her terrible headaches, and we had to switch to another one.

When it first came out, I read more about seizures. I wish I had some links to those articles. It’s been a few years.

I decided I would wait a while before giving it to my daughters because I felt like they would learn more about side-effects.

I don’t need to prove anything. Merck already counseled the authorities on the matter. Perry obviously IGNORED Merck!

Yes, including for Hepatitis B, a blood or body fluid born virus not spread through causal contact, commonly spread through sex.

Hep B can be contracted in a non-sexual manner. HPV cannot.

However, it can cause seizures and bad seizures can cause brain damage and even death. It also can also cause Guillain-Barré syndrome.

That's a mighty funny use of the word "cause" there. Millions of people have died within 24 hours of eating potato chips. Write this down on a post-it and put it somewhere you can see it frequently: Correlation does not imply causation.

Guillain-Barré is observed in people who've had a Gardasil injection at the same rate as people who haven't. Fainting was reported at the same rate as in people who got a placebo -- it's a relatively common side effect of any injection. There have been 32 deaths contemporaneous with Gardasil vaccination. There is no indication of causality.

Perry admits that his handling of the original issue wasn't everything it should have been. I think that Bachmann has mishandled this issue and has hurt herself.

In a nutshell, yes. Overblown, yes. Media frenzy, yes.

"To have innocent little 12-year-old girls be forced to have a government injection through an executive order is just flat out wrong," she said during the debate.

Since there was a parental op-out provision, the only 12 year old girl that would be "forced to have a government injection through an executive order" would be a 12 year old girl whose father is Texas Governor Rick Perry.

You say this: “Why get down in the gutter like them and insult conservative candidates.”

Then two posts later in the thread you say this: “You mean perry didn’t get all the Merck money?”

You’re either a hypocrite or Schizophrenic.

You really can’t trust the CDC, et al these days. The Obots run the sites. I prefer commercial sites if I want to get anything approximating the truth.

So Merck told Perry that Gardasil causes mental retardation?

I’m not ready to throw her under the bus yet.

If that’s what she really believed, then it wasn’t a deliberate lie. If she investigates and finds out she was wrong, she can apologize later, but I still give her credit for not caving to pressure.

And just as an aside, suppose that there is the chance she’s right? The vaccine hasn’t been out long enough and been used widely enough to tell.

In either of the two cases, I can bet we’ll not be hearing about it from the MSM.

It’s too early in the process yet to eliminate any candidate based on one incident. Since I haven’t found the perfect candidate yet, I’m willing to wait and see. If she’s not worth it, she’ll bury herself. If she is, we’ll find out.

You are free to make of it what you will but Perry did lie, he has received far more than the $5000 that he originally admitted to receiving

First of all, you provided no information. You provided a source of information which means you supplied nothing specific. How convenient. If you're going to claim that Perry was bought by Merck and/or his actions were a direct result of Merck's financial contributions, you're going to have to come up with some specifics.....that is, if you want to be taken seriously. If you can't, then you're no better than Michelle Bachmann making claims she can't support.

Any fool with a typewriter can make a false claim (Cheney started the war for oil and to enrich his buddies at Halliburton - it must be true, just look at all the info I found from googling it!!) but it takes a lot more to show an actual quid pro quo between Perry and Merck for the measly amount of money they contributed to him over a ten year period. There are legitimate issues regarding Perry, but your irrational attachment to this one issue is costing your credibility big time.
