Jimmy Carter would be 'pleased' with nominee Romney

By ALEXANDER BURNS | 9/15/11 6:26 PM EDT

From the department of unhelpful praise, former President Jimmy Carter tells Rachel Maddow he's a-ok with the idea of Mitt Romney as the GOP presidential nominee.

"I'm not taking a position, but I would be very pleased to see him win the Republican nomination," Carter told the MSNBC host, according to advance interview excerpts. Continue Reading

Carter also said he was grateful to another Republican candidate, Michele Bachmann, for her volunteer work on his own presidential campaign.

"I appreciate that she helped me out," he said.

Carter's kind words for the GOP only go so far, and the Georgia Democrat also said he doesn't think "anybody's going to beat Obama."

Of course he would. Because if Romney runs, the current administration wins.

Or at the least, the fewest number of Obama’s er, “reforms” would be undone by Mitt Romney compared to the other contenders.

Bachmann has been accused in the recent past of stating her commitment to keeping part if not all of a Carter manifesto, although she sure doesn’t look it to see the political positions she takes today. She’s one of the more sensible contenders, her recent over-the-top criticism of Gardasil notwithstanding.

Maddow must have been thrilled to have Carter on the show. I bet she felled a “Matthews” thrill going up her leg. I missed the interview, but wonder how she phrased the key question:
how does Jimmah feels about no longer being the worst president in US History?

When Carter talks about Israel I suspect he’s senile, but after this little nastygram he appears to have a few more marbles that I thought.

Oh, I could see any squishy democrat liking Willard Romney. It gives them a chance to elect one of their own in the Republican Party.

My normal reaction to that comment would have been "that was a LONG time ago", but considering how her supporters have lambasted Perry......

Well, what the heck...it was a long time ago.

Bachmann must have been really young when she worked on his campaign.

I suspect that Carter would be ok with open borders Perry, too.
