Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann's story about a woman who claimed that her daughter suffered "mental retardation" after receiving a vaccine against HPV could fetch the woman's family thousands of dollars. But the family can only collect if Bachmann or the unnamed woman can prove the story is true.
Two bioethics professors have offered to pay more than $10,000 for medical records that prove the anecdote Bachmann told after Monday night's Republican presidential debate is true, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports:
Steven Miles, a U of M bioethics professor, said that he'll give $1,000 if the medical records of the woman from Bachmann's story are released and can be viewed by a medical professional.
His offer was upped by his former boss from the University of Minnesota, Art Caplan, who is now director of the University of Pennsylvania Center for Bioethics. Caplan said he would match Miles' challenge and offered $10,000 for proof of the HPV vaccine victim.
"'These types of messages in this climate have the capacity to do enormous public health harm,'" Miles said of why he made the offer. 'The woman, assuming she exists, put this claim into the public domain and it's an extremely serious claim and it deserves to be analyzed.'"
Bachmann told the story after she criticized opponent Texas Gov. Rick Perry for using an executive order in 2007 to mandate that all girls entering the sixth grade receive a vaccination against the Human papillomavirus, a sexually transmitted disease that can cause cervical cancer.

They are vicious. Anonymity seems to breed viciousness.
Too bad Bachman is stuck with the double standard. Obama gets "57 states", "My Muslim Religion," + a Biden gaffe machine, and on and on, but Bachman has the uphill climb against the CDC/BigPharma/FDA revolving door.
Has anyone thought about why there is a National Vaccine Injury Compensation system? The numbers represent real people, with real children who were injured. Where are the academics and ethicists to stand up for them? What about the folks who get turned away from compensation because they can't prove causation, because a doctor ain't going to step into that mess by bringing up the vaccine as a cause of injury/death?
I do hope someone steps up to the plate, here. Unforunately, individual parents don't have giant lobbying machines working for them, or seats on Pharma boards or on the FDA. They just get years of relentless care for a vaccine-damaged child. Heaven forbid THOSE people get a voice.
Then again, such a person is being asked to open up their medical records, their pain, their suffering, plus scrutiny by an unfriendly (to say the least) press, RINOs, Country Club Repubs, etc., who in their right mind would want to deal with that?
I am amazed on FreeRepublic, of all places, how Big Government people get about the vaccination issue - somehow, TSA searches are bad, but getting injected with mercury or being forced to accept medical intervention against one's will is suddenly an exception to that liberty.
I am not holding my nose to vote for a fake conservative again.

Men have been running this country in the ground for years.
I guess they reserve the right to take the blame for losing the Republic.
It falls on their backs. I take no comfort in that.
Conservative are going to have to do better than the current crop of men we run for President. We always end up with a RINO who we pretend is conservative . Usually because what the democrats offer is a full blown communist.
Perhaps it’s the election season. But why do they have to be so nasty? Really dispiriting - as you say.
The thing is....no one in Texas GOT the shot. All this about nothing. I know, ‘cause I live here.
Wow. Seems this nasty thread has turned positive. Decent people coming out to shame the mob. Bless you!
Nobody wants "some poor woman".
What is wanted is the examination of the (non-existent) teenager that allegedly went from "normal" to "retarded" so that the truth can be determined.
If the story is true, other teenagers will be spared the horror of having their lives destroyed because the truth about Gardasil causing mental retardation will then be proved.
If the story is a hoax (as I would bet you my life's savings it is), then girls that might benefit from the vaccine will not be scared off by the irresponsible hoax.
Yet, there you are, wanting to hide the truth by whining about "some poor woman" but insisting in keeping The Hoax alive, without any proof, and scaring patients that would benefit from the vaccine.
You want the right to scare millions of parents and teenagers with the Big Lie but you resist any effort to determine if the Big Lie is actually the truth by portraying it as an attack on "some poor woman".
Your thought process is seriously warped.
You are, in effect, arguing for the right to yell "Fire!" in a crowded theater without being challenged.
” She wasnt likely to win the nomination anyway, but this thing really blew up in her face.”
Anyone think Mitt would pick her as his running mate?
See my post #53.
Demyelinating disease - eg MS
Guillain-Barré - peripheral nerve disease causing lack of muscle power and paralysis, usually patients recover, but not always
No female running mate this time around - not needed and too risky.
Yes, Polybius: I know you as the guy who wants to run around America with a needle sticking it into the arms of virgin brides.
Personally, as I said to you once before, I think you are nuts. Seriously nuts.
Oh good grief, listen to yourself.
Pulling the gender card is every bit as despicable as pulling the race card.
If there’s any shame i’ts on you.
That's right! And they've been white!! White people have been running this country into the ground for years too! AND, they've all been over 5'6'' tall! Tall white men have been running the country into the ground for years!
What we need is a black female midget, yeah - that's the ticket.
Tempers usually flare on FR during election seasons, but I must admit I have been taken back by some of the comments directed at staunchly conservative female politicians. At DU, yes, but here at FR???
It is hard to not come to the conclusion that the criticism directed at Palin and Bachman very often has more to do with their gender than their political positions. But, again, no one who enters national politics should be above critique (Gov Palin would be the first to agree with that!) and although the "nasty" critics of Palin and Bachman ofter are very loud and obnoxious, they still appear to be a small minority here at FR.
What in the world are you supposed to be proving here? I read the entire PI, and there is nothing about 24 deaths in medical trials.
Believe it or not even with really conservative Political people, they do not want females in the conversation or Superior to them. The way we can nail them is to say we will join them in the head if they think they can make big decisions without us by pretending to have to pee.
I did not know this crap existed with Pubbies, I thought it was a Rat problem when I was a Democrat. Pubbies are just more sneaky about it.
LOL!
