Professors offer more than $10,000 for proof that Bachmann’s story about HPV is true

Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann's story about a woman who claimed that her daughter suffered "mental retardation" after receiving a vaccine against HPV could fetch the woman's family thousands of dollars. But the family can only collect if Bachmann or the unnamed woman can prove the story is true.

Two bioethics professors have offered to pay more than $10,000 for medical records that prove the anecdote Bachmann told after Monday night's Republican presidential debate is true, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports:

Steven Miles, a U of M bioethics professor, said that he'll give $1,000 if the medical records of the woman from Bachmann's story are released and can be viewed by a medical professional.

His offer was upped by his former boss from the University of Minnesota, Art Caplan, who is now director of the University of Pennsylvania Center for Bioethics. Caplan said he would match Miles' challenge and offered $10,000 for proof of the HPV vaccine victim.

"'These types of messages in this climate have the capacity to do enormous public health harm,'" Miles said of why he made the offer. 'The woman, assuming she exists, put this claim into the public domain and it's an extremely serious claim and it deserves to be analyzed.'"

Bachmann told the story after she criticized opponent Texas Gov. Rick Perry for using an executive order in 2007 to mandate that all girls entering the sixth grade receive a vaccination against the Human papillomavirus, a sexually transmitted disease that can cause cervical cancer.

“Usually, when you falselyu accuse a person of being either a misgynyst or a racist, they tend to get a bit angry.”

Agreed but with good reason, mostly because it’s almost always an indefensible excuse and it’s one of the more hurtful accusations one can make.

I agree. The misogynist card is as intellectually dishonest as the race card. They need to be cast from the deck like the Jokers they are.

No, because I get results, and have the scars to prove it. Sounds like you don't like to do the hard work.

Just like my brother used to say to dopes, that must be your bunghole talking because your mouth knows better.

Of course, we’re talking about misogyny. My point is that not one individual is being singled out with that label. It’s a general statement - although I have been snarky with you because you are as blind as a bat.

Did you see the post in which one guy here has written to the owner of this site complaining about the hatred expressed towards female candidates? It’s now getting to the point where people are complaining openly and publicly to the owner about this. You can keep your blinders on, that’s fine with me. But I’m not letting this issue go.

You said Herman Cain said we were uptight, by the way. He didn’t say we were humorless. There’s a difference.

Herman Cain was on a talk show recently ( can’t recall which one) and said we (Americans) have lost our sense of humor. In the debate, he said “uptight”.

I stand corrected and hang my head my head in shame.

“But I’m not letting this issue go.”

Delusions can create a wonderful state of mind untill reality rears it’s ugly head.

Be happy, or pi$$ed, or stoked or whatever makes you happy, just don’t let your self preoccupied world collapse when the state of things as they actually exist become evident... if it ever does.

Well samantha, I don't doubt what you say is true. Biases in humankind are hard, nay, impossible to erase.

The difference in Pubs versus Dems is the REACTION. Republicans don't complain about it, they work on doing the extra work that is required to overcome the bias.

Democrats legislate and complain and sue.

So, stay Republican and work harder. You know how it is, so just work it.
