If California Republicans didn't already suspect they are nonentities in the lively GOP presidential primary contest, they got a clear message this week from one of their party's leading 2012 candidates - La Jolla (San Diego County) homeowner Mitt Romney.
[Romney] has eight-point lead over....Rick Perry among Republican voters in California, according to a new Field Poll, and will be scouring California on a fundraising drive Friday. But while he'll visit San Diego, Atherton and Pebble Beach, Romney doesn't plan to greet hundreds of activists who make up the nation's largest Republican organization as they kick off a three-day state convention this weekend in Los Angeles.
Four GOP presidential candidates, including TeaParty darling Michele Bachmann, are expected to attend the event at the J.W. Marriott in Los Angeles - about a two-hour drive from Romney's $12 million oceanfront mansion. Perry, who held several events in the state last week, also is not attending the conference.
"It's certainly dispiriting to Republicans," said Washington-based GOP strategist and pundit Karen Hanretty of Romney's decision to sidestep the GOP convention in the nation's most-populous state.
But the former state party spokeswoman said Romney's move is based on a harsh reality: "It's extraordinarily unlikely that any Republican is going to win the state of California in a presidential race. ... California is an ATM."

The new numbers underscore how California's blue-leaning political makeup and increasingly Latino demographics continue to represent a challenge to the GOP's prospects even as its right-leaning grassroots activists present a dilemma for Republican candidates, DiCamillo said.
"Oftentimes, people who attend the party conventions are from the far end of the political spectrum," he said. "Romney is probably perceiving that he may not receive a great reception (at the state convention); his position in the race is more of a moderate."...

But one man came off his death bed on September 9th to lead the invocation at a rally for Rick Perry in Orange County.

Both the article linked for the thread and the one lined just above, have interesting tidbits for political junkies.
They expect them to actually BE republicans?
Romney will win CA which is ironic since he is tougher on illegals than Perry (McCain wiped out CA last time).
“It’s certainly dispiriting to Republicans,” said Washington-based GOP strategist and pundit Karen Hanretty of Romney’s decision to sidestep the GOP convention in the nation’s most-populous state.
Most republicans are not so high maintenance and easily offended. It’s not like those from Iowa or NH...ouch!
Yes...I did notice the bump for Palin
“Yes...I did notice the bump for Palin”
Maybe so. But, I think Romney is right to skip Cali. Why bother? It would be a waste of his time and money. Let Cali twist in the wind. Seems that the political class is more interested in dumb enviro legislation than fixing their economy and spending problem. An example; I saw on the news yesterday that the Cali legislature is about to pass a law requiring all new construction to use a type of window glass that will not cause birds harm should they fly into the glass. Sooo, until Cali voters get their heads on right, well... screw’em.
However, the business community is not....
CALIFORNIA: ..Texas Gov. Rick Perry has become a folk hero for people like Stewart as he's marketed his state as a low-cost and business-friendly alternative to California, which is fertile job-hunting ground for Perry.
Texas has added 929,000 jobs since 2001, while California has lost approximately 635,000 manufacturing jobs in that same time, Stewart said.
Answering questions after his speech, Stewart told the story of Perry sending programmed cellphones to CEOs in California with a simple message: "If you're interested in growing your business, please call me. I'm here to help."
"They're doing something right down there," Stewart said of what he dubs the "Texas miracle." "Gov. Perry will go anywhere, any time, to try to recruit companies into Texas."
Perry has taken the state's regulatory process and managed it himself, Stewart said
[CA Economic Development Corporation President Mark] Lascelles emphasized that it does no good to belabor California's regulatory environment.
"Unfortunately, we can't avoid it. We have to deal with it," he said. Speaker focuses on job creation
And in MONTANA: Legal gamesmanship threatens our energy future Texas Gov. Rick Perry is able to boast about job growth under his watch, noting that over 265,000 jobs, or nearly 37 percent of the jobs created nationwide since the summer of 2009, have been created in the Lone Star state.
He credits this growth to a few simple conditions: low taxes, a regulatory climate that is fair and predictable, and a legal system that limits frivolous lawsuits. According to the Wall Street Journal, nearly one-fourth of the 70 companies that left California this year relocated to Texas.
When new or relocating companies and investors survey the landscape and consider Montana, what do they see? Well, when it comes to natural-resource development, the landscape looks risky.
Recent headlines highlight two major resource development projects slogging through endless legal and regulatory challenges. Investment flees this kind of uncertainty, so Montanans interested in the future economic stability of this state should be wary of the signals we send --- [relates short history of 2 outrageous examples] --
The common experience for Tongue River Railroad and Tonbridge Power is this: Even if you play by the rules, even if you follow the letter of the law, even if you engage with the public during a planning process, even if you get formal approval from the regulatory authorities, you are certain to face organized opposition whose sole intent is to frustrate project development to the point of financial starvation .
Because in TEXAS:Aug 5, 2011: Finding middle ground on EPA-Texas electric squabble [EPA doesnt do middle ground] Texas' grudge match with the Environmental Protection Agency is getting nastier and riskier, with the fallout threatening to reach the state's power grid. Want another reason to worry about the lights staying on? Or how about another hit to the economy? You've heard lots of political posturing about Texas' way of life being threatened by an overreaching federal government. This time, Gov. Rick Perry has a point. ..
Don't be surprised if the attorney general jumps in after Perry slammed the rule for threatening Texas jobs and families and putting reliable, affordable electricity at risk. Late last week, 31 members of Congress from Texas, including eight Democrats, signed a letter to the White House asking for relief. The utility commission also filed objections with the EPA.
Texas officials and the EPA have been clashing over air pollution and environmental issues for the past decade. The conflict has deepened under the Obama administration as the EPA turned more aggressive and Perry sharpened his attacks on Washington.
Now THIS is funny!
Like Perry says, “You’ll always know where I stand.” And he was telling them the governor of Texas wanted to do business with them.
I work for a company that does business both in California and in Texas. I cringe when I have to do anything with our licenses or taxes in California. It takes forever, the people can be rude and snotty, it took me literally 3 months just to get an officer changed on our corporate records there. Texans are wonderful, helpful, go out of their way to be helpful. Paperwork is a breeze, and you always find you are smiling by the time you hang up the phone.
By the time the primary rolls around, most of the CA GOP will have turned to Perry (because they’ll have moved to Texas).
IF you'd rather NOT be pinged FReepmail me.
IF you'd like to be added FReepmail me. Thanks.
bump.
For sure. I live in Texas, DFW Metroplex, and am well aware of the EPA’s attempt to shut down Texas’ energy programs. A few; coal fired power plants, Permian Basin Sand Lizard - will shut down most exploration and drilling and production in west Texas and eastern New Mexico, Sea Horse in the Gulf - will shut down exploration and drilling and production off the coast of Texas. And, then there's Texas’ agricultural and ranching industry - all sorts of reg’s making their lives miserable. Congress needs to neuter the EPA and while their at it the same to Carol Browner....
Romney is giving Perry an opportunity here.
With Perry up nationally and in the South, he could strike deep behind the lines here with an effort in California.
See, now there ya go — Mitt Romney would be the PERFECT independent candidate in 2012. He wouldn’t siphon much off the Pubbie side, but would suck down the support that might otherwise go to Zero, much in the way that a vampire sucks blood. Thanks Cincinatus’ Wife.
