A University of Minnesota bioethicist is offering $1,000 for medical proof that a woman’s daughter suffered mental retardation from the vaccine for human papillomavirus virus, a story that was told by Rep. Michele Bachmann after Monday’s debate.
Bachmann has come under fire from the medical community for suggesting the vaccination for the HPV virus, a sexually transmitted disease that can cause cervical cancer, is linked to mental illness.
Steven Miles, a U of M bioethics professor, said that he’ll give $1,000 if the medical records of the woman from Bachmann’s story are released and can be viewed by a medical professional.
His offer was upped by his former boss from the University of Minnesota, Art Caplan, who is now director of the University of Pennsylvania Center for Bioethics. Caplan said he would match Miles' challenge and offered $10,000 for proof of the HPV vaccine victim.

She should have stuck with hammering on the mandate, IMHO. It is up to the public and their representatives to debate the merits of things like vaccinations. To have a chief executive issue an EO that mandates something (arguments about opt out aside) does raise legitimate questions of conduct in office.
Perry has said over and over that the EO was a mistake, but he stands by the vaccine program.
I wish. I would be proud to have her convictions and principles. The one thing that she will do is get rid of Obamacare. It is in her passion. I just hope we don’t make a mistake and get somebody in there that is not going to be able to get rid of Obamacare. I don’t know if Perry really wants to do that or not. Michele at least has worked in the House and can work with them to get rid of Obamacare. If it is not gone in 2013, we are stuck with it forever. Does that not concern you at all. Sure Perry is a nice guy and all, but he does not have the passion to get rid of Obamacare like Michele does.
Why didn’t he offer a Million? He won’t have to pay cause it ain’t going to happen even if the person exists. Privacy concerns you know.

Bachmann said that the woman in question approached her after the debate and related the story about her daughter. It’s not like Bachmann found someone and is protecting her from publicity. The media was all around the candidates that night, and maybe they have pictures of the people approaching the candidates on the podium, whether they were simply congratulating them or talking to them. So if this woman is real she would’ve surfaced already, or maybe she would reveal herself… I guess we have to wait and see.
It might help if she can convince Gore to run, then the Myth of the Dead Polar Bear might be relevant.

Because that is what Bachmann did.
I would imagine that ANY medicine has a negative side even a deadly one. There is no certainty with any of them and some people might die from taking them. But we have to be more concerned with the 99.999% which they help.
Absolutely not! She honored her commitment to help him because he asked. She helped MANY get elected as a private citizen. What he has done is no reflection on her - he wasn’t working for her.
I never said that but she has been in the House and knows how that runs and that is where the repeal of Obamacare must pass. I think we will be stuck with Obamacare with any candidate except Bachmann. She is not my first choice but she is very passionate about getting rid of it.
Good point! Mrs. Bachmann may be right. Gardasil is not a good vaccine. Americans need to learn the truth. Our children do not know any better.
