A University of Minnesota bioethicist is offering $1,000 for medical proof that a womans daughter suffered mental retardation from the vaccine for human papillomavirus virus, a story that was told by Rep. Michele Bachmann after Mondays debate.
Bachmann has come under fire from the medical community for suggesting the vaccination for the HPV virus, a sexually transmitted disease that can cause cervical cancer, is linked to mental illness.
Steven Miles, a U of M bioethics professor, said that hell give $1,000 if the medical records of the woman from Bachmanns story are released and can be viewed by a medical professional.
His offer was upped by his former boss from the University of Minnesota, Art Caplan, who is now director of the University of Pennsylvania Center for Bioethics. Caplan said he would match Miles' challenge and offered $10,000 for proof of the HPV vaccine victim.

Texas is deep bible belt territory and I am fine with fundamentalists. I love them, but it is my opinion that many fundamentalist Christians some how feel that giving a vaccine for an STD to their precious chaste daughters some how sullys them.
And that’s fine, but people are so wierded out about this stuff that they would deny a state approved program to vaccinate others?
Frankly I find the entire matter very bizarre.
“Someone came up to her and told her this right before the debate. Her error was not taking time to check it out.
That person (assuming they weren’t there to sabotage her); needs to come forth and back up Bachmann. “
Well then she is guilible and not fit to be president or even VP.
That is hardly basis for the charge of corporate cronyism that Bachmann and now Palin have charged.
WELCOME TO FREE REPUBLIC’S MINNESOTA PING LIST!
147 MEMBERS AND KINDA-SORTING GROWING...!
FREEPMAIL ME IF YOU WANT ON OR OFF THIS LIST!
I’ll go 10 Gs for the real birth certificate.
I’d give 22K for Barack Obama’s real B.C. and his college records.
I’m fearful that Michele will continue to be seen as a flake, that once she is not the R candidate for POTUS...she will not be re-electable for her House seat in a very conservative district in MN...
For the sake of argument, if Bachmann actually produced an instance of the vaccine linked to adverse side effects, would the persons offering money pony up? My guess is no.
I agree, I liked her and thought we could have a good woman run for president. She lost me the night of the debate and cemented it the next day in interviews. I may have to go with Perry despite his warts.
I do not know if it is or not.
I just want all the facts we can get on all the candidates, so no one can hide anything like what we have now.
This is clearly inspired by the $100,000 offer from the conservative writer to anyone who could prove the charges against Tea Party members by the Dims in DC walking btwn buildings (”spit on me, etc”.).
Bachmann prob. has the proof if she wants to publicize it and subject the person to the mass hysterical reaction the left will heap on her. Guess it won’t happen. Conservatives have class so don’t sell their people out for cheap publicity.
If she could produce the source then the media would be on their doorstep making their lives a living He**. For $1000.00 I would say no way. For $100,000- Maybe.
I don’t think Perry is hiding anything
She is a lawyer after all. It obviously was an attempt to land a few good body blows to Perry. A few landed and from then on it was a series of wild punches.
Perhaps conservatives should quit worrying about flakes and worry more about the character of the people they put up as their front runners.
This guy is a repub, who is okay fiscally, I guess. However, the use of taxpayer funds to pay for bennies for illegals ain’t too fiscally conservative in my book.
I don’t care for open borders. He may say that we need border security, but he is on record as being for open borders. Once again, which is it? Or are we supposed to shut up and ignore it?
If you are so worried about Bachmann looking like a flake, your state is full of leftards to choose from.
But that is my point: She did not have the sense to check it out.
When she is President, is she going to go with an idea just because someone says its true?
You have to know that is not a good plan.
She pulled the age old, “I met a guy who said....” BS that many politicans do.
The other things she does is tell you what she voted for when discussing an issue. Usually, it was voting for a bill that was defeated. Politicians think that matters to people.
It doesn’t.
She is toast. Get out the jelly.
Vetting a candidate is fine.
Bachmann made false allegations and doubled down on them.
Palin bothers me as well by getting on the (MERCK) Crony capitalism train without proof.
She had better be able to explain why she endorsed Perry.
I think both Bachmann and Palin acted foolishly.
Palin has cooled her rhetoric since the initial insinuations.
I think Perry started it quite frankly when he tried to passed a dangerous vaccine in the middle of the night......I just find it hard to believe that he would sign a EO when he never did it before. It stinks badly. Think about it. If anybody else had done this. There would be outrage.
I pray that somebody is found. Bachmann is a great conservative and is being criticized for telling the truth. So much for conservatives around here.
