Minnesota professor offers $1,000 for Bachmann's HPV vaccine victim

A University of Minnesota bioethicist is offering $1,000 for medical proof that a woman’s daughter suffered mental retardation from the vaccine for human papillomavirus virus, a story that was told by Rep. Michele Bachmann after Monday’s debate.

Bachmann has come under fire from the medical community for suggesting the vaccination for the HPV virus, a sexually transmitted disease that can cause cervical cancer, is linked to mental illness.

Steven Miles, a U of M bioethics professor, said that he’ll give $1,000 if the medical records of the woman from Bachmann’s story are released and can be viewed by a medical professional.

His offer was upped by his former boss from the University of Minnesota, Art Caplan, who is now director of the University of Pennsylvania Center for Bioethics. Caplan said he would match Miles' challenge and offered $10,000 for proof of the HPV vaccine victim.

.
The $5000 was really $30,000, plus billions in political advertising in his favor.

To post all the deceit that a Pharma Co has to do to get one of their deadly poisons approved would shut this thread down to a crawl.

Let's throw some facts into the armwaving:

From the CDC report on adverse reactions to Gardasil: http://www.cdc.gov/vaccinesafety/vaccines/hpv/gardasil.html

Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS)

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) has been reported after vaccination with Gardasil® . GBS is a rare neurologic disorder that causes muscle weakness. It occurs in 1-2 out of every 100,000 people in their teens. A number of infections have been associated with GBS. There has been no indication that Gardasil® increases the rate of GBS above the rate expected in the general population, whether or not they were vaccinated.

Blood Clots

There have been some reports of blood clots in females after receiving Gardasil®. These clots have occurred in the heart, lungs, and legs. Most of these people had a risk of getting blood clots, such as taking oral contraceptives (the birth control pill), smoking, obesity, and other risk factors.

Deaths

As of June 22, 2011 there have been a total 68 VAERS reports of death among those who have received Gardasil® . There were 54 reports among females, 3 were among males, and 11 were reports of unknown gender. Thirty two of the total death reports have been confirmed and 36 remain unconfirmed due to no identifiable patient information in the report such as a name and contact information to confirm the report. A death report is confirmed (verified) after a medical doctor reviews the report and any associated records. In the 32 reports confirmed, there was no unusual pattern or clustering to the deaths that would suggest that they were caused by the vaccine and some reports indicated a cause of death unrelated to vaccination.

It appears that it is you that are unaware of the underhanded deceitful process that brings deadly poisonous drugs to market. (or you do and are even more deceitful than the druggers)

The odds that will happen are very long indeed. Even if (and that’s a huge if) that person comes forward, and even if (an even bigger if) it turns out that there is some evidence of mental deficiency that occurred at the same time as the administration of a vaccine, it will take a lot more than that to prove that the vaccine *caused* the mental condition.

Bachmann made an unforced error. There was absolutely nothing to be gained from telling (or re-telling) the anecdote she was told about this, regardless of when it was told to her, or whether the one case told to her checked out.

As anyone who has done some statistics knows, you can find a few instances of almost ANYTHING that is co-incident with a widely-administered vaccine, wide administration of some medicine or medical procedure, power lines, RF fields, the use of microwave ovens, whatever.

This sort of stuff drives people who are versed in mathematics nuts, because we have such an ignorant populace that it is nearly impossible to explain to them that sometimes just because A and B happened in a relatively close period of time doesn’t mean that they have anything to do with one another, unless we have a sufficiently large population where these issues occur in ways that we can statistically filter out the “noise” in the multiple variables in all these people’s lives.

The point she should have made was about government mandates in health care: She’s against them. Perry and Romney are for them, and that’s just like Obama too. That’s been her point all along on Obamacare, and she could have been consistent on that - and nailed both Perry *and* Romney, since they both are guilty of putting forth policy which TELLS people what to do about their medical care.

Ahhh.... but she didn’t do that, did she? She wanted to go for the tear-jerking emotion of administering injections to “innocent” “little girls,” while she didn’t mention Romney’s health care mandates.

She tried to get slick with her political tactics and it has blown up in her face.

Do you know what the FDA stages are, and how drugs get approved by the FDA? I doubt it, based on your posts on FR.

Shows how you lack discernment. My daughter has made many trips to the FDA w/pharma. So you are messing with the wrong person here. Must be irritating for you to be wrong so often here!

And there is NO vaccine that is 100% safe - and that is not Perry's fault. Everyone that takes one, takes a risk but they feel the risk is worth it. That's their decision. Why are you going off on the rant MB has? She may be right but what does the possible effects of a vaccine have to do with Perry? Nothing! This is about how Perry went about it.

Rick Perry is shaping the debate once more.

I thought he fudged up by touching the 3rd rail of SS last debate, but I was wrong. He sucked the air out of the room and shaped the debate for the entire first hour of the CNN debate

He is now bringing healthcare and immigration to the forefront and he aint skeered

From your link:

“In 1989, only 15 percent of people over age 65 in the U.S. and Canada were vaccinated against flu. Today, more than 65 percent are immunized. Yet death rates among the elderly during flu season have increased rather than decreased.”

http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2009/11/does-the-vaccine-matter/7723/2/

When the govt., and media, tell us how many people die from the flu, they never tell us how many received flu shots, but STILL died. Just a thought.

Also, some vaccines have aborted embryos, so if I ever get another vaccine, I’ll research to make sure the vaccine is ethical, so I can use another company.

The offer wasn’t to make public the woman or her daughter, but to make the girl’s medical records available to a medical professional to review to see if there is documented mental retardation or other mental illness that could be connected to the girl’s getting a gardasil vaccination.

The patient’s privacy is 100% covered by HIPAA unless the patient chose to make it public. Penalties for medical professionals revealing anything at all about a patient, or one whose records have been reviewed, are steep, up to potential loss of license. The financial penalties run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

I don’t know if Bachmann made up the story or if the mother did. But the simple fact is that you can’t become mentally retarded, as Bachmann claims the mother said. at 12 years old. You are born with it, or not.

Well if the person who told Bachmann that story is real

That's the question right there. Did this woman even exist. I have no idea.

Bachmann has been caught in little untruths before. When she said that her and her husband didn't benefit from the farms subsidies from the family farm when they did. (not a lot of money) And her excuse about why she was "late" to the meet and greet in Iowa that Perry attended. She said she was at a "family function" when her own mother admitted that she wasn't.

You realize, of course, that TX is one of the 27 states that are suing in federal court to overturn Obamacare? And that TX was one of the original 14 states to join the suit at the earliest possible date, March 23, 2010, after it was passed by the Congress, giving the states’ AG’s a cause of action? And that The TX AG did not pursue the case without the governor’s authorization? .

That’s certainly one way to ‘speak out’ and not remain silent. Ultimately those cases are the only way that Obamacare will be overturned, if the states succeed in the SCOTUS. It’s about actions being louder than words.

Frankly, I don't give a rabid rat's @ss whether he is "skeered" or not.

The question becomes one of whether or not he will uphold the US Constitution, and what I'm seeing has not reassured me of that.

Exactly. She went too far. She doesn’t have a balance nor with taking on her opponents - she doesn’t touch Mitt when obamacare, jr. is staring her in the face. I think she supposes her rants make her look powerful.

Yes many states have done the same. But you overlooked the point I was addressing. Not going to repeat it - if you have an agenda you would overlook it no matter how many times I posted it. And your action speaks louder than words shows your agenda. And her words brought action - the very next day! I guess you overlooked that, also.

When she spoke, they listened and this is when they were pushing it through. Didn’t hear anyone else speak out then. Virginia was the first state to go the court route and then, eventually, other states did the same.

And many many ‘We the People’ citizens made their voices heard in town hall meetings. And many of us called and faxed while they were pushing it through amidst the silence of elected officials. Now it’s to their advantage to, personally, speak out about it.

Yep. Lots of debate here, but few facts.

As for the CDC report, no pattern does not mean no cause-effect relationship, just that one has not been consistent.

I think there are two points of concern with any vaccine which must be weighed against the risk of the disease: squalenes and thimoserol, the first, to induce a stronger immune response, may be linked to the sudden rash of peanut allergies, the second, a preservative containing mercury may be linked to neurological deficits. There is also always the risk that the person receiving the vaccine will be allergic to one of the components therein, and could suffer adverse effects.

I think it is for the person or the parents in the case of a minor, to weigh those risks and decide.

This is no area for government mandates although some are generally accepted before entering school. 'Herd immunity', the phenoenon that a majority of the population being innoculated will prevent the spread of the disease and thus protect those who are not innoculated may work to a degree, but again is a risk the parents/individual must weigh in making their decision.

Since HPV is linked primarily to behaviour, that risk can be behaviourally mitigated as well.
