A new Twitter hashtag designed to help fight misinformation against President Obama appears to have backfired in early use on Wednesday.
President Obama's Twitter feed, which is run by his campaign staff, on Tuesday evening started promoting the new website AttackWatch.com and hashtag #AttackWatch, designed to fight misinformation against the president.
The hashtag was already in heavy rotation by Twitter users by Wednesday morning, but many users are conservatives such as columnist Michelle Malkin, who offered up her own daily column as an example of an Obama "attack."
The website is meant to be "the first line of defense against a barrage of misinformation," according to an email from Obama's campaign manager announcing the launch on Tuesday.
Businessman Herman Cain, a Republican presidential hopeful, also responded to the announcement of the website on Wednesday.
"Seriously?" he tweeted.
Remember flag@WhiteHouse.Gov?
Someone tell me how to participate. I have a twitter account, but don’t know how to use the “hash tag”...what do I do?

Just write your post on twitter, then put #attackwatch on the end of your tweet.
Then your tweet shows up on everybody’s #attackwatch searches and timelines.

hashtag - someone please explain this to an old goat FReeper. I monitor twitter mainly to follow some news tweets. I see a lot of @’s and #’s but don’t really know what it represents.
LOL! Never heard that one.
Can I ask a stupid question?
Of course all politicians do opposition research. But has any president ever taken what sounds like a paranoia about what is being said about them to this level?
I’ve never heard of this sort of situation before, in which the White House wants you to report what is being said about the president or Democrats.
It makes me think that this president is overly concerned about political back and forth, and overly concerned about negative things that are said about him. If he spends too much time worrying about what people are saying about him, how does he have time to do his job?
And of course his staff and campaign workers will end up spending big amounts of time simply reviewing all of this information of what people are saying about Obama, rather than doing other things.
