During Monday nights CNN/Tea Party GOP debate, Republican presidential contender Michele Bachmann took aim at Gov. Rick Perrys 2007 executive order requiring middle school girls to be vaccinated against the human papilloma virus (HPV), the most frequent sexually transmitted disease and a leading cause of cervical cancer.
Bachmann called out Perrys financial ties to Merck & Co., the manufacturer of the vaccine, Gardasil a group, she said, that stood to gain from the order. Bachmann insinuated the governors decision may have been swayed by the companys donations to his campaign.
We cannot forget that in the midst of this executive order, there was a big drug company that made millions of dollars because of this mandate. We cant deny that, said Bachmann.
What are you suggesting? pressed moderator Wolf Blizter.
What Im saying is that its wrong for a drug company, because the governors former chief of staff was the chief lobbyist for this drug company. The drug company gave thousands of dollars in political donations to the governor, and this is just flat-out wrong. The question is, is it about life, or was it about millions of dollars and potentially billions for a drug company?
The Minnesota Congresswoman was referring to Mike Toomey, Perrys former chief of staff, who served as one of Mercks three lobbyists in Texas. Bachmann did not point out other efforts to push Gardasil in Texas and those connections to Perry.
For instance, at the time Merck doubled its lobbying budget in Texas and gave more cash through the group Women in Government, a national group of female state legislators. The mother-in-law of Perrys chief of staff (at the time) served as the state director for the advocacy organization, the Associated Press reported. Additionally, a high ranking official from the companys vaccine division sat on the groups business council.
Today, Toomey heads a pro-Perry super PAC called Make Us Great Again.
Perry responded to Bachmanns by saying he received $5,000 in campaign contributions from the pharmaceutical company a figure that couldnt have influenced his decision-making, in when he raised $30 million for his campaign.
If youre saying that I can be bought for $5,000, Im offended, said Perry. Bachmann replied, Well, Im offended for all the little girls and the parents that didnt have a choice. Thats what Im offended for.
But that $5,000 figure isnt the whole picture. While Perry was indeed the recipient of that amount during his 2006 gubernatorial reelection bid, on the same day Perrys staff met for a briefing on the vaccine, Merck PAC has donated nearly $30,000 to the Perry campaign since 2000, according to Texas Ethics Commission reports. The largest sum from Merck came in October 2004, when the major pharmaceutical group donated $10,000 to Perrys coffers. The company has given $7,500 to the governors campaign since Perrys ill-fated executive order.
The HPV vaccine order has drawn considerable attention and criticism from social conservative and Tea Party circles, where its railed against as an infringement on individual rights by the government, and even an encouragement for young girls to have promiscuous sex.
Perry maintains the order, eventually overturned by the Legislature, was not a mandate and had an opt-out portion for parents. Since announcing his presidency, Perry has called the order a mistake, and said he should have consulted with the Texas Legislature instead.

I’m sure Romney’s lovin’ it. Palin won’t get in, Bachman cannot win the nomination, ditto Cain. So we’ll get Romney.
This is probably the tip of the iceberg. There are many ways to funnel money to candidates.
Oh goody. Another (11 so far) post on this topic. Let’s see if we can get this thread up to three hundred posts this time.
If youre saying that I can be bought for $5,000, Im offended,
Sounds like he’s haggling over the price.
It’d take a whole lot more than $5,000 to buy a governor. Thirty million maybe.
By all means, let’s just ignore all this stuff and nominate a guy. THEN, we’ll find out about all this crap. Great idea.
Guaranteed, this is just the tip of the iceberg.
This isnt even a slow trickle any more. Perry is toast if this keeps up. Is Palin the only one who has been thoroughly vetted?
“’If youre saying that I can be bought for $5,000, Im offended,’ said Perry”
I was “offended” that he response wasn’t “I’m not bought by anyone” or “No amount of money will buy me.”
Maybe it came out differently than he had intended, but it didn’t have the desired effect when I heard it.
If it can be proven that Perry took action due to some donations, I am of course interested, but the crux of the whole thing is not contingent on that for me.
Was it right to issue this type of an E.O., or wasn’t it?
I come down on the side of wasn’t...
Tip of the iceberg:
Then there was the stock bought and sold, no doubt.
There was a method to Sarah Palin’s madness by injecting the subject of “crony capitalism” into the campaign.
When you pick your pony, you’ve gotta put your blinders on.
I’m not sure we should nominate him or not. I’m just saying it’s a big win for Romney and no one else.
See RGA.
Well almost right. We’ll get Obama for 4 more years. Who among us is the perpect person? Where is the perfect candidate? If any of the Republican candidates truly believe that 4 more years of Obama will destroy the US, then the patriotic thing to do is go after Obama and his policies, not selfishly attack the other candidates in order to win the prize.
Perry is not being well-prepped by his handlers, or he’s not prepping himself well. When you state a number ($5K from Merck) in a debate, it HAS to be right. If it’s wrong, you’ll look stupid or dishonest (or both) within 24 hours.
I wonder how much Romney got for getting Romneycare passed.....come on folks politicians take money for their campaigns, was he wrong to issue the EO?....I think so but thats a far cry from being bribed. He had been accepting campaign contribution from Merck for years....along with every other politician in Austin.
>Well get Obama for 4 more years.
I don’t think so. Romney can beat Obama.
Perry also could not defend his giving State benefits to illegal Immigrants.
Bad night for him, he looks very weak to me.
