When Rick Perry threw his hat into the ring for the Republican presidential nomination, it set off such a collective cringe among liberal Texans that it likely scored on the Richter scale. Being a native Texan with basic respect for modern civilisation means living in a constant state of low-grade humiliation, as the state's size provides an interrupted stream of news stories highlighting the cranks and Bible-thumpers who win state and local offices but a presidential campaign means exponentially expanding the amount of national and international attention paid to the streak of mean-spirited ignorance that rules Texas politics. With Rick Perry, this means a whole lot more coverage of the fact that Texas is the "killingest" state in the entire union, having executed more than four times as many prisoners as the next contender in this gruesome contest.
Of course, we of the non-barbaric sort do hope that all this attention paid to Rick Perry's willingness to execute anyone on death row no matter how obviously screwed over by an imperfect and often unjust judicial system could somehow provoke enough national shame that we actually do away with the death penalty. Which we really need to do, not because we have any great love for vicious murderers, but because the death penalty is a known destroyer of a fair and sober-minded justice system.

Personally I think it's GREAT that Texas executes so many criminals.
Per the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, the Offender information is as follows, in part:
Woods, Jr., Steven Michael
On 05/02/2001, in The Colony, Texas, Woods and 1 co-defendant used a 380 caliber pistol, a 45 caliber pistol, and a knife to kill a 21 year old white male victim by shooting the victim 6 times in the head and cutting his neck 4 times. A 19 year old white female victim was also killed by receiving 2 shots to the head, 1 shot in the knee, and cutting her throat. Woods and the co-defendant took property from the victims which included their car keys, backpacks, a cell phone and other personal items.
Oh God, the ludicrous Amanda Marcotte strikes again. I had hoped the Guardian had fired her for stupidity. The comment section should be fun.
Different subject- article from a site i can’t post from- Pa judge struck down individual mandate clause in Obamacare.
It is silly they try to claim a Texas Governor has the power to stop the executions. By himself, he is not able.
Only the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles has that power, provided the Governor then approves it. Alone, he can only postpone it once for 30 days.
Too bad the scumbag won’t be able to read the article.
He’s being put down this evening.
Amanda is so full of hate. Wow! I guess a hater’s gonna hate.
There was similar nonsense in the last execution thread I posted.
I wonder if Amanda finds it hard to breathe with her head up her @$$ all the time...
Karla Faye Tucker. Nuff said.
Not according to the author, but I get your point.
We were “helping along” bad guys long before Rick Perry was
Governor and I figure we’ll be helping them along after he’s gone.
The interesting part is the anti-Perry spin by the slitch who wrote this.
The way they talk you’d think he was Judge Roy Bean. Texas may be the leader in U.S. executions, but they’re hardly prolific, especially considering some of the material they’ve got to work with.
By the way, if Perry were a Democrat you wouldn’t be reading any of this tripe.
Personally I think it’s GREAT that Texas executes so many criminals.
Agree electric bleachers would save a lot of time and money.
it may have been intended as a hit piece, but I’m sure it’ll have the opposite effect on us bitter clingers.
Perry may have lost no sleep over Texas's 234 executions during his tenure, but the death penalty panders to crude bloodlust
Blow it out your @$$ Amanda. You are a Leftist Commie Pinko.

I can just imagine what type of wimpy, cuckold, Alan Alda type the boyfriend is.
So Amanda Smanda would have the justice system operate like O’jaad would operate it...
Ohhh, so you murdered 3 people...Put a $MILLION in ObamaPak and I’ll see you get a cushy life in the federal pen, then down the line I’ll get old Bill Clinton to manage a pardon for ya. Better yet, buy the Hawaii White House for me...
Rick Perry has enough respect to trust Texans as they meet out justice. I ceratinly wouldn’t want him to be continually stepping into that process.
Outlaw Abortion and we will outlaw the death penalty. Of course all the money that is currently going to Planned Anti-Parenthood will be taken away to pay for meals and housing for all those currently on death row.
At least when you execute people on death row they are statisitcally 99.99% Guilty as opposed to those who are 100% innocent when they are killed before they are born.
