Palin even went as far as to lend her voice to the charge leveled by Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) during the debate against Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R): That he allowed a law to go though requiring HPV vaccinations for adolescent girls because of a $5,000 campaign donation and his relationship with his former chief of staff, who went on to lobby for a pharmaceutical company.

"I knew there was something to it," Palin said of learning while she was Alaska's governor that her Texas counterpart had given the go-ahead to the vaccine. "Now we're finding that now, yea, something was up with that issue. It was an illustration or bit of evidence of some crony capitalism."

Here's some background on how Perry came to sign the order in furtherance of the legislature's priorities, rather than crony capitalism as Bachmann and now Palin insinuate…

In 2005 as part of a larger effort against cancers, the Texas legislature set a priority to eliminate cervical cancer mortality by 2015 (HB 2475). It directed the state health agency to produce a report and deliver it to the governor by the end of 2006. It did so and that report concluded the vaccine Gardasil made the goal attainable. 47 page report (Acrobat PDF)

Perry signed the order in 2007 protecting parental rights with an opt-out clause while ensuring insurance, Medicaid and other programs would cover the expensive vaccine while an opt-in would not.

He attempted to balance protection of personal liberty with attaining the legislature's public health goals.

Rick screwed up. Period. His supporters need to accept the magnitude of that mistake isn’t some small thing. He tried stripping the rights of Americans over their children and giving it to government.

Money aside, again, that’s no little flub. That goes against everything it means to be a free man/woman. People need to think about where that kind of unchecked power stops. Their guns? Their homes?

And of course, this report said that he should bypass the legislature completely by mandating a vaccine by executive order, right? I mean, it's for the children, right?
