The Falling Man

Do you remember this photograph? In the United States, people have taken pains to banish it from the record of September 11, 2001. The story behind it, though, and the search for the man pictured in it, are our most intimate connection to the horror of that day.

I’m disgusted at the behavior of the journalist assigned to find out who this man was. I mean, he takes this picture to his funeral? And shows it to the wife & daughters? What a cretin.

And the writer of the article doesn’t criticize him for it?

No wonder the media types are such.....well it’s Sunday so I’ll have to stop right there.

This photo breaks my heart every time I see it.

My clinic was more than 2,000 miles from Washington, New York, and Pennsylvania, yet, even we had consequences.

1) Our office phone immediately stopped ringing for a full day. When it did start ringing it was for people to cancel their appointments. They were out of work. The hotels and car rental agencies where many of my patients worked were shut down. Some called in to say that their business no longer existed because it had been obliterated when the World Trade Towers fell.

2) Then when the phones did start ringing again many were making appointments because they wanted to use their COBRA benefits before they ran out.

3) For many weeks ( and months even) after 9/11 patients would say:

“My roommate is out of work. Her business no longer exists. Everyone in the NY office died.”

” Four of my co-workers died.”

“I am out of work. I don't think the business will reopen.”

Yes, even though 2,000 miles away, I personally took a financial hit but there was an emotional toll as well.

I’m so sorry. 9-11 had many more casualties than the initial 3,000. My heart breaks for every single one of them.

Your post made my screen all blurry, :)

It’s an oddly written article. Maybe because it’s all about the photographer and not the photograph. And, badly written, too.

I don’t care exactly who this is. I don’t care if he made the decision to jump out the window or the decision to stay inside and die from the fires. But, his family does, so leave it alone. It is “pornographic exploitation” otherwise.

Nothing conveys the horror of that day more than these pictures. I can't imagine how it would have felt to have lost all hope of rescue and make that decision whether to die in the advancing flames or jump to certain death. Would it have been suicide to jump rather than face a certain death in the flames?...I don't think so. These individuals likely made their reconciliation with God and I am sure spent those last few seconds in peace.

I live in Memphis, on September 11 all meetings were cancelled, we were supposed to have garden club and it was canceled. That Sunday the church was packed.

Somehow, “famous” doesn’t seem to be the appropriate word to describe this. Horrifying......

9/11: The 25 Most Powerful Photos

http://news.yahoo.com/photos/9-11-the-25-most-powerful-photos-1315611364-slideshow/25-most-powerful-photos-photo-1315610966.html

They have that photo posted there along with 24 others. What really hacks me is not the photos presented but if you look to the right of it and slightly down a bit you’ll see a box filled with a montage of people’s photos titled, “How we’ve changed: Stories of a nation transformed.” Among the several photos they have a Muzzie woman in full head gear with the caption, “We are Americans.”

When you click the box it goes to this link.

http://news.yahoo.com/september-11-anniversary-profiles/

If you click her photo it has a the caption below it that says, “In the aftermath of 9/11, the Arab American community faced discrimination and hate crimes. Linda Sarsour is trying to change that.”

The jumper was said to be Norberto Hernandez, a pastry chief, and I wonder. I was at the WTC one Saturday night just three weeks before they fell. On a a beautiful Summer night and my friend and I were walking across the Brooklyn Bridge, and decided we would go up to the observation deck of the WTC which is open late. We spent about an hour up there. You could smell the salt air off of the Atlantic, and see fireworks from Coney Island where the Brooklyn Cyclones were playing that night. Looking North, you could see up the dogleg turn on Broadway before it crosses Canal Street. The single cars threading through traffic reminded me of blood cells pushing their way through capillaries. We came down from the observation deck to get a bite to eat in the little food court on the next floor down, and there were a group of Hispanic workers and cooks watching soccer on a large screen T.V. in the eating area. When a supervisor came by, they scattered like birds, only to come back in ones and twos a few minutes later. I wonder if Mr. Hernandez was one of those I saw?

You are right: of course it's not suicide. The choices of "living" or "not living" were off the table. Not on the agenda at all. No, it was not a preference of death over life.

The only choices on the table were "dying in the hell of a jet-fuel inferno" or "grabbing one last breath of God's pure air". The man leapt into the air, knowing that either way his life was over.

And if by some crazy miracle he had lived (if he fell 10 feet and then landed on a hot-air balloon like in some crazy movie) he would not have been disappointed, because he was not seeking death. He was not a suicide.

agreed, and well said.

All this exploitation and hype of 911 is making me ill. Real Americans all hurt over what happened, but it is being turned into a circus.

The memorials should only have family members and those who were directly involved. All the celebrity vampires should be banned.

Our military should go out and find 3,000 Muslim extremist and kill them. It should be done every 911.

IMO, the Media has done this nation a grave disservice by sanitizing what really happened that day. There are all sorts of videos and stills of victims on fire, jumping and hitting the pavement, flying from the building upon the second plane’s impact and much more. I think Americans and the world need to see these things so they truly won’t forget. The sanitizing is why there is not enough outrage when a politician decides no prayer and no firefighters or police would be allowed at today’s memorial. Its why the outrage is not greater over the confirmation TODAY that the proposed mosque on the site where thousands died in an attack by Muslim terrorists, will go forward.

Show these videos and stills, with the appropriate warnings. Have parents of students sign off so there children can SEE reality, not just some cleaned up taste of the events of that day. Believe me, most can handle it. If we don’t this day will go the way of Veteran’s Day, which, unfortunately for most, has become a good “sale” day.

Besides the obvious, something that immediately creeped me out about this photo is that is looks like The Hanged Man in Tarot cards.

I have a different feeling on this picture. Let them show it and see the evil that caused this man's horrible death. Americans are asleep and stupid when it comes to Islam. Rest in peace you great American!
