While addressing college students in Richmond, VA, President Obama was surprised to learn that schools use trailers, also called 'modular buildings' or 'modular classrooms.' During his visit Obama said he was approached by an educator who mentioned she teaches in a trailer. Obama did not mention that the teacher had a problem with her situation, but he made it clear this was unacceptable.
"I just -- in the back, I was taking some photos with folks who had helped out to organize this event, and there was a young lady who is a teacher. And she said, I heard your speech last night. I really appreciate it. Im teaching eighth grade English, and I teach in a trailer. We shouldnt have people teaching in trailers. We shouldnt have kids learning in trailers. They should have classrooms with Internet and science labs," President Obama said to the college crowd.
The practice of using trailers is quite common at public schools and more often than not the accommodations in the modular buildings are better than classrooms inside the the main building. These modular buildings are used for several different reasons including for temporary purposes. For example, while the building or a classroom is being renovated the school may opt for a trailer until the improvements are completed. Ironically, renovating classrooms and schools is something Obama is pushing for in his this new stimulus bill.

Pre-sent 0 demands that all school kids learn to use teleprompters.
Indonesia, where he developed amnesia.
What? Sidwell Friends doesn’t have trailers???
My wife manages all the facilities and equipment for our school district. A good portion of her job is managing the “portables” - procurement, installation, relocation, leases, etc.
So Obama is going after her job now?
They used trailers when I was a kid. What’s the big deal?
My great grandmother went K-12 in a one room school that was a church on Sundays.
Bet he doesn’t know how much a gallon of milk costs, either.
The University of Missouri had a quonset hut next door to Jesse Hall, the administration building. It went up as a temporary building during World War II and was there when I went to college 30 years later. It was finally torn down about 1990 or so after serving for 45 years.
What a dolt. It it would be nice if this was his “UPC Scanner” moment, but the press will give him another free pass. Even worse, the “UPC Scanner” event was not like the press portrayed it at all, but that didn’t stop them from falsely pumping it up for years.
I read Dreams from my Father during the primary season in 2008, and very much got that impression. Nothing that has happened since has changed that opinion. Nothing that has happened has been much of a surprise, either, sadly.
He hasn’t gotten out much. Ever.
My grade school had several portables in the 1940’s, and that was when you could still get a good education in public schools!
0bama is retarded.
"Learning" has nothing to do with it.
It was the end of the baby boom and our school was bursting at the seams. Been there, done that--the Tshirt no longer fits. It was a tad cold in the winter, but I did learn to read, write, spell and do math with absolutely no harm to my phyche.
And FWIW, I was born a week after our Dear Leader, but I suppose he would have no frame of reference as to what elementary education was like in AMERICA when he was a child.
Around here they build a new school and back the trailers in the next year because they didnt plan or figure how m,any students they would have,\.
But what the heck the Board of Ed, has Masters degrees and Doctorates so who am I to complain.
Trailers can be moved to accommodate chances in population easier than brick buildings. They come in several styles from dumpy to quite posh. Much like regular construction. They can be kept up or let get junky just like regular construction. Here in California they made more noise during a earthquake. When the F4s landed or took off they were louder. The pilots came back about a day before the carriers did usually. They were also closer to the playground witch was good to get to the tether ball pole first. The worst thing about was the lower ceiling made it harder to throw a ball while the teacher’s back was turned.
Thats nothing - Trailers?? Why when I was a kid in the 70’s and my school lost power and other reasons I HAD to go to classed in Fort Monroe VA..in the actual old fort..about 100 yards from where Jefferson Davis was jailed...coolest thing ever!!! well now..back then it was damp and OLD...LOL!
Not sure what I'd have needed a whole trailer for.
There is nothing wrong with these “modular classrooms.” In fact, they’re an enormous saver of money. They allow a school to expand and contract with the passing demographics of a neighborhood, without having to ship the students to other districts.
I see nothing wrong with keeping neighborhood schools in the neighborhood. Obama is just trying to tug heartstrings to compel wasteful spending, which is SOP with Dems.
Gosh I was taught in trailers at several different schools my entire education starting in 1960. What’s the big deal? Some of them are still in use.
