Cynthia Daily had a child with a sperm donor, then discovered that her kid had at least 150 half-siblings and a range of potential medical and emotional risks
Nobody knows exactly how many children are conceived with donated sperm, but an estimated 30,000 to 60,000 such babies are born in the U.S. each year. According to The New York Times, many of these children have more half-siblings than their parents bargained for. One mother, Cynthia Daily, used a donor registry to trace at least 150 children to the same sperm donor who fathered her son. "It's wild when we see them all together they all look alike," says Daily, who sometimes vacations with other families who used the same donor. But such large pools of related offspring face increased risk for rare genetic disorders, not to mention accidental incest between donor siblings. Is it too dangerous to let one man father 150 kids?

I’ll bet you’re right
LOL! Tears squeezing out of my eyes...
WoW! Daddy downer’s right arm must have been twice the size of his left due to all of that exercise in making baby juice. LoL!
My Bad!
Correction: Donor’s...not Downer’s. Too much coffee this morning.
My brother’s wife used a sperm donor because my brother couldn’t have kids. They have never told the kids that my brother is not their biological father. The kids are now in college. I have always thought that was a mistake and that the kids might be really messed up psychologically when they inevitably learn the truth.
I agree. God is a mathematician.
The number of IVF births appears to equal the number of aborted babies. (60K per year).
Have to be careful criticizing this ‘practice’ - there are FReepers with IVF children.

UNITED STATES
Number of abortions per year: 1.37 Million (1996)
Number of abortions per day: Approximately 3,700
I haven’t read the rest of the comments or this article, but I’ll pipe in anyway since they mentioned this story on Fox’s the 5 as well. This is not the choice of the donor! This is entirely the sperm bank’s decision! This is such lousy reporting and misplaced blame. All the stories I have have read about this phenomena state that the donor is always told oh you’ll only be fathering a few children.
From what I understand, the donor is paid each time his sperm is used. He knows.
“My brother’s wife used a sperm donor... “
I am sure your brother and SIL thought that keeping this a secret would ensure that the children bond with your brother. However, when or if the children do find out... they are sure to feel like their entire lives are a lie. I am not sure if your brother/SIl received any genetic information like heart disease, diabetes etc... but knowing one’s genetic history (when possible) is helpful. This is certainly tricky for your family!
You are so right, but sadly, most people don’t have the spiritual eyes & ears to get it.
Sperm whale.
I think you are mistaken, or at least mixing different types of donations. Some sperm donors are contracted specifically for a particular conception attempt and are paid quite a bit more. If they have very viable sperm they may make more money the next time. Others donate to a sperm bank and are paid considerably less and are part of a sperm inventory from which couples/women choose a donor. In the second case they are paid to make a series of donations. What happens after that is basically out of their hands, and unless they agree to be an “open donor” (their identity and some medical records available to offspring when they turn 18) they may never know anything about any offspring. The guy in this specific case (the 150 kids) had no idea he had that many offspring.
