Last-minute legislation that would allow unions to organize child-care providers who work out of their homes was approved by the Senate this evening.
Assembly Bill 101, by Assembly Speaker John A. Pérez and Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg, would affect roughly 40,000 home-based child-care providers, as well as some individuals receiving state subsidies to care for relatives
The proposal was introduced as an amendment to an existing bill late last week and had its first and only public hearing Wednesday.
The labor unions backing the bill -- American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees and the Service Employees International Union -- have for years sought the right to organize the child-care providers.

The fix is in. The unions own the governor and legislature.

So what's the angle? Home daycare providers and people tending to disabled relatives can band together to demand government handouts? Aren't home daycare providers entrepreneurs?
The desire to spread unionism is truly a filthy and reprehensible thing.

They kidnap stuffed animals, cut up diapers, and throw out oatmeal.

This should turn out to be a real boon to society.
Anyone out there know of a bigger, more abused, more multilayered scam than the “individuals receiving state subsidies to care for relatives” charade? Now they will unionize! You rule, California!
Babysitters, parents . . . anyone else we forgot?

Soon the homeless and drug addicts will have a union. here in Santa Barbara it seems as if they already do the way the city councils opens the doors wide open for them, let them take over our city, provide them with food, and homes all on the taxpayers dime.

Our legislators will stop only when there are no taxpayers left to bleed. Always generous with other people’s money. Should tell them to prioritize, but that would be like asking a 2 year old not to eat candy.

You mean I can come down to Santa Barbara and the city will give me a place to live? That should be my plan for winter when I can no longer stand it in Oregon. What a deal!

All the Seattle/Portland homeless kids do. The come for the free home and food and stay for the weather and views.

When everyone is unionized, there is no private sector unless you pay enormously for a thin profit margin, which, people pack up and leave...
Government ends up owning it all, all the means of production.

haha. I'll keep an eye out :-). I like your thinking. If your gonna live on the public dole do it with flair and for God's sake pick the best places to revel in the cheap good life. I used to live in Portland and Seattle by the way so I get it wanting to move. Sadly too the three state are very different when it comes to politics anymore.

Dang! I hear ya. Guess that's what they were all chanting or muttering as they jumped the trains to get here. Hope you do make it down soon though. Free or not. Gonna have to plan a Reagan Ranch visit. :-).

What could possibly go wrong here? Look for cost to parents to skyrocket, this in the end will prove to be undoing of many current child care centers. Will go underground and illegals operating below the radar as child care providers at lower costs will become the beneficiaries.

“So what’s the angle?” Union dues
To: SmithL
Sounds like this is going in the direction of what happened in Michigan under former Democrat Governor Jennifer Granholm. These unionized child care workers were considered employees of the State and millions of dollars in union checkoff dues were automatically deducted and diverted from the State subsidies intended for the child care providers. The election for unionizing child care providers had only 15% participation and people did not realize what was happening until it was too late.
This practice was eliminated in 2011 under Republican Michigan Governor Rick Snyder.
