Perry vs. Paul: A Texas-sized war
Washington Times ^ | 9/8/11 | Steven Dinan

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. — The scrap between Rick Perry and Mitt Romney may have gotten more attention in Wednesday’s presidential candidates debate, but it was tame compared to the dust-up between Mr. Perry and Rep. Ron Paul, two Texans who apparently have spent plenty of time digging up dirt on each other and aren’t afraid to use it.

At one point when the video cameras weren’t rolling — though the incident was caught by still photographers — Mr. Perry walked over Mr. Paul’s lectern, took hold of the congressman’s wrist and wagged his finger at him.

The physical exchange was matched by the intensity of the two men’s verbal attacks on each other.

Drudge also posted a ridiculous story about Ron Paul winning some post debate online poll as if its proof that Ron Paul was even taken seriously last night.

Actually, Perry got the better of Paul in their exchanges about Reagan and got RP to admit he left the Republican Party because of Reagan. Did you hear Ron Paul’s tirade against Reagan? Guess not.

Has Paul ever spoken out against that?

It's a candid snapshot.

If you take enough photos of people engaging in normal activities, you will inevitably get one or two that look funny.

I'd bet the video of it looks far less confrontational.

You're correct, it definitely puts Perry in perspective.

I've known people who do that, and it's clearly a weak strategy when attempting to dominate conversations, silence an opponent and or intimidate.

I personally do not tolerate others putting their hands on me.

This was very revealing.

Neither of them have particularly pissed off or concerned looks on their faces.

Maybe he was telling Ron Paul a joke?

Or saying, "follow my finger with your eyes. I want to see if you're drunk."

Don’t be silly. Mind your mouth is all Perry is saying. I doubt that he even mentioned what Paul actually said.

Reminding me of a story. Glen Campbell was in a movie set in the South.
The script had him saying cetrtain stuff to another character. Campbell demurred. When the director, asked him why, he replied that in South if one said those words a fight would happen. The kind of insult war that was acceptable in California was not done in Arkansas. Yet the script showed no fight. Campbell knew the score. My guess is that Paul does also.

Obviously, ths is a desperate Ron Paul campaign trying to make something out of nothing.

First of all, this guy who pulled this stunt may support Ron Paul, but most of all he has it in for Rick Perry. This action wasn't authorized by the Ron Paul campaign -- and up until this latest ad, one of the thing Ron Paul has been criticized for is NOT going after his opponents enough. Ron Paul usually depersonalizes issues, not personalizes them. Negative campaigning does not come naturally to Ron Paul.

Second, logically, if that conversation was going to happen about that rogue campaigner, it wouldn't be happening at the break. It would happen before or after it. This was clearly about what went on during the debate. Perry was pissed off that Ron Paul landed some humdingers to him re HillaryCare and his comeback about Ron Paul's letter to Reagan didn't deflect attention as well as he'd hoped.

I know a few guys that would make that gesture while telling a joke.

Not with that expression and body language.

Ron Paul's supporters have done some very slimy things to try to bring Perry down. Ron Paul could have stopped them, but did not. I don't blame Perry for disliking him.

That doesn't change the fact that Perry acted like a bully.

In fact, I had a AH boss that did that to me, years ago, in a clear attempt to intimidate, and I told him don’t do it again, and told him I was not intimidated... I was fired 3 days later.

Doesn't look like he did He certainly didn't when given the opportunity to do by Fox News.

He did say that it was "silly" that people would ask him about it.

He did that on purpose, and got the reaction he was expecting from you.

It's business, and the guy that gets all huffy about being "intimidated" when the other side plays their games loses.

People like that generally find a way to get back at you

I had a boss once who did that too. He'd get right in your face, wag his finger at you and scream at the same time. The day I had enough, I told him to back off and sit down. He looked at me, stunned. I repeated it and told him that I knew he was trying to intimidate me, it wasn't working, so sit down and quit yelling! He sat down -- and I quit. Weirdest part was that by the end of that conversation, he was actually trying to talk me into not quitting! In retrospect, I think that he was just trying to regain control of the situation.

Bullying like that is always a weak move.

GW would never have done this, not any other real Texas man I know. This is not presidential behavior.

Manly Texas men make me smile. One of the best memories of President Bush I will ever have is the one where he rescues his secret service agent by getting in a shoving match with Chilean bodyguards. I'm so glad it was caught on tape for me to enjoy over and over again.

youtube link.

That's what I call Presidential, not some senile old anti-Semite pork barrel king who thinks it's just nifty for Iran to have nukes, believes 9-11 was an inside job, and fears we might build a wall to keep our citizens from fleeing to Mexico.

First chance to really see Perry talk and debate. I am thoroughly underwhelmed. I was almost embarrassed for him at times. sigh. Not protecting Ron Paul here in this exchange cause I don’t know what was actually going on, but Perry looks like a bully with very little substance behind the mic.

Ron Paul is galloping insane. Perry is a sleaze. Lock them both up in a cell with just a knife and a fork for two weeks. Cleaner election.

I don't give a damn what the excuse, business or not.

BTW, the businesses went bankrupt and closed down 3 months later, and were sued by other employees. for payroll issues.

Doesn’t really matter what Ron Paul says about it now. The visual is out there and will come up again, repeatedly. And people won’t give a rat’s rump about context or the heat of the moment.
