Joseph McVay is accused of shooting his mother, 46-year-old Deborah L. McVay, in the head with a .22-caliber rifle Jan. 2 at their home near Big Prairie. He was 10 at the time. He has denied a charge of murder as a juvenile and remains in custody.

His father, divorced from his mother, gave the 10 year old two pistols, the boy kept in his room.
Wow that’s an awful story.
I’m sure that this will be turned into a gun issue by the anti gun crowd. He would have killed his mother another way if he had to. It was apparently a situation that was going to reach a boiling point eventually. The fact that she was separated from the husband wasn’t a good sign. You have to wonder what was going on in that house all along if this child was capable of murdering his own mother over a petty argument.
Yeah, that’s more than a little odd isn’t it? Somebody should have a nice long conversation with daddy. Who knows, maybe he put the kid up to it. Maybe it was something along the lines of “If you kill her, you’ll only get juvenile hall”. Something does smell bad here.
“Something does smell bad here..”
You took the words right out of my mouth. The parents had just separated. The Father gave the boys guns. The Mother even argued with the Father about the situation. IMHO, an emotional ten year old child can be swayed to do a lot of things by a parent especially around a time where there is so much emotional strife/anger/sadness/grief. Lies could be told to the child... not saying it should be excused. I’m just thinking there is a lot more to the story than we probably know.
Read another article about it. Sounds like a classic Borderline Personality “Witch” Mother. Sons of such mothers, if they don’t kill themselves, can often turn into serial murderers or kill their mothers.
In my opinion (having grown up with a Borderline Mother myself and having a dead brother and another in the Pen) that mother deserved what she got because she was torturing that kid. I think he deserves a second chance in a decent home with sane adults.
Whenever a mother is killed by a kid you can bet she was a classic Borderline. They often first impress others as a “sweet little old lady” or very nice but at home with the kids they are monstrous.
His father gave him the guns but not the education that must go along with the guns. Mother did not then remove those guns. ALl of these people have/had some screws tightened with less than the proper torque.
Sounds to me like the kid has had anger management/impulse control problems from a very early age.
That said I think that if dad felt strongly that the boy should have his grandfathers guns it would have been prudent not to also give the boy ammo to go with it.
If he is not mature enough to control his temper he is not old enough to bear arms.
Any child, IMHO, that has that type of temper/anger management/whatever you want to call it... shouldn’t have had a loaded gun or even an empty one. Sad to think that the Mom argued with the Father over the issue but didn’t take them away (maybe she was afraid to?).
Let him go — it’s society’s fault. He can’t be an evil little thug because he’s a juvenile.
It is often difficult to recognize these problems in your own child. You are so close to the child that it almost seems normal and you learn to deal with it because you have to every day.
Typically if one parent recognizes a problem and wants to do something about the problem the other will take up a defensive posture.
Often it will be dismissed as something the boy will grow out of given time and in most cases it is or at least the child learns to control it in public most of the time.
But a fairly large percentage will end up in jail.
I am actually wondering if this child doesn’t have a mental disorder with his history. Granted, the parents may have been in denial. However, for the boy’s father to give him a loaded gun... what was he thinking?
