At Reagan’s House

[snip]

The news media really don’t get Rick Perry and his appeal to Republicans. The questions designed to undermine him (Social Security, death penalty, creationism, etc.) strengthened him with Republicans. Mainly, they liked what he said and how he said it. Perry’s a natural, like the man whose library served as a backdrop. No question Perry’s problem will be in finding enough swing voters in Purple states to create an Electoral College majority; being deeply Red probably isn’t enough, even in a strong GOP year, and the stereotype of Perry as “Bush on steroids” was proven true.

As usual, Romney turned in an acceptable performance, but he appealed to the head, not the heart. Romney’s nomination depends heavily on Republicans’ coming to the conclusion that Perry cannot beat Obama — and the polls are going to have to show this clearly, month after month. Obama is not cooperating with the Romney “remainder” strategy, since POTUS is sinking steadily.

Michele Bachmann got little time when it mattered, and is proving how deadly is the combination of gravity and inertia. Newt is winning applause but not votes. Jon Huntsman (R., News Media) got caught in a trap laid by his own campaign manager; he’s going nowhere. Paul will keep but not expand his 10 to 15 percent. Santorum and Cain didn’t break out. On to the next two debates — and the long roller-coaster ride before a victor is crowned.

I found it interesting this morning listening to a few news reports on my way in to work, hearing the “breathless” announcers say Perry may have hurt himself with his tough language. Good grief. Americans need to hear it straight, particularly Social Security. And Perry, like him or not, is right on that issue. I hope enough younger Americans will understand, too.

In the middle of a battle, why would one commander praise his opposing commander when he must get his soldiers on a footing to take him out because it is the only way to win a battle. This smacked of McCain proclaiming that we would have nothing to fear from an Obama presidency. How’s that one workin’ out for us?

All I could hear was go along to get along and if I say something nice about him that maybe some people won’t think I’m a complete animal as he was sure the media would try to paint him.

Once a politician starts down this path, I’m done with him becaue all it leads to is crossing over to his “friends” on the other side of the aisle.

Contrast with bold colors and not pasty pastels. This is about our future, not scoring points in a debating club.

Our candidates won in 2010 taking firm conservative positions and bold language. The moderate sissies are scared. Real conservatism wins. Period.

“strengthened him with Republicans” - that’s the media talking point to drive Perry out - that he can’t win a general. Step one is to win the Primary with as conservative a candidate as we can.

Step two is beating Obama. You don’t do that without a contrast.

The msm needs to portray Republicans as scary. Brian William’s almost had a heart attack because the debate audience applauded the question he posed to Gov. Perry about the number of executions in Texas.

The msm wants to tell people how and what to think.

It isn’t working.

Ron Paul attacked fellow Republicans more than he attacked Obama last night.

That makes him scum in my eyes.

Don't you realize what he was doing was undermining Obama with his base and taking the steam out of Obama's boast of getting bin Laden?

You're commenting on Perry saying that Obama was right to continue the war and take out bin Ladin (but Perry made of point of saying it was the Seals) and keeping Gitmo open. (one of the British papers reported that Perry was talking about George Bush when he made those comments - Ha!)

But Perry also said that Obama must have the worst intel or is an abject liar for saying the border in El Paso is safer.

And as mentioned in the linked article:

Jon Huntsman came across as “ a sanctimonious, nasty little man.”

Those were interesting little pieces; I read them all. Mosrlt I came away with the impression that several of the analysts seem to be horrified that Americans would applaud Perry’s statements about the death penalty. And that the debate was basically a tie between Romney and Perry. Kudos to the few that mentioned there were other debaters in the house.

As for me, the debate didn’t change or make up my mind; I’m still leaning toward Perry, but am voting against Obama no matter what.

To me the sorriest thing I heard last night was even our supposedly toughest candidate on illegal immigration (Rep. Bachmann) essentially endorse amnesty. Cain was the only one who didn’t completely embarrass himself on the question.

It was unexpected and the MSM didn’t want to touch it with a 10 foot pole. Not that I heard anyway. But Perry got to praise the Seals. There’s a art to getting points made in these debates — you never know when or if, you’ll get your opening

I thought he was talking about President Bush too.

Did you notice in the first debate “snippet” that Comcast didn’t get the first 40 minutes on the air in parts of the East?

I want to hear speeches in the coming months (by the still standing candidates) that will put their positions on the issues into a broader, detailed context.

I would think applause at the question would have favored Mr Williams gotcha question. The tremendous applause at the answer, really told the tale. I was a little surprised about that time in the debate, so I wasn’t really sure about the applause line and the time line.

In addition, lines I thought should have gotten applause, the audience was silent, so I got to thinking the audience was being directed as to applause.

Yes, and I don’t get how that’s simply a “vaguary”. Customers should be hopping mad!

I also want the candidates to lay out in detail their plans for the economy, foreign policy and debt. And Big Labor. We still have a little over a year until the election, so there’s time. Not much though.

I took the applause thing as more of an indication of who they were approving of. There were times that Huntsman and others made some good sounding rhetorical points and nobody made a sound.

FWIW, I could have crawled through the screen and smacked the H out of that snarky Politico jerk. Geez, what an A—hole.

Boy do we agree on that point. It took all of a millisecond to figure out what that guy was all about. I had just explained the point to my better half that Rush thought the “politico” was a white house invention. It showed.
