KABULThe Sept. 11 attacks that triggered the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan also uprooted 16-year-old Abdul Ghattar from his village in war-torn Helmand province, bringing him to a desolate refugee camp on the edge of Kabul.
Yet Mr. Ghattar stared blankly when asked whether he knew about al Qaeda's strike on the U.S., launched a decade ago from Afghan soil.
"Never heard of it," he shrugged as he lined up for water at the camp's well, which serves thousands of fellow refugees. "I have no idea why the Americans are in my country."
n a nearby tent that is the camp's school, his teacher, 22-year-old Mullah Said Nabi Agha, didn't fare much better. He said he has never seen the iconic image of the Twin Towers burning. He was vaguely aware that some kind of explosion had occurred in America.
"I was a child when it happened, and now I am an adult, and the Americans are still here," Mr. Agha said. "I think the Americans did it themselves, so they could invade Afghanistan."
The teacher's view is by no means rare here. The events of Sept. 11, 2001, of course, are known to educated Afghans, and to many residents of big cities. But that isn't always the case elsewhere in a predominantly rural country where 42% of the population is under the age of 14, and 72% of adults are illiterate. With few villages reached by television or electricity, news here is largely spread by word of mouth.

Yeah, we did it in purpose because that scum infested hellhole has SO much we wanted.
Even for a complete illiterate, this guy is a moron.
Yes, Afghanistan is such a lovely place that the Americans and the Brits and the Canadians and the Aussies decided to invade to take it away from the Afghan people.
I'm afraid we are fighting extreme ignorance and backwardness. Sometimes when ignorant and backward societies clash with other societies, war results. In wars, people die.
Kill as many taliban and their sympathizers as possible. Leave a token force behind in Afghanistan to keep an eye on things. If there is a hint that any force or faction is planning on hitting a western target, kill that force or faction. Kill their relatives. Kill their bankers and the people they do business with. Kill their friends. Destroy their homes and hideouts. Poison their wells. Salt the earth they live on and destroy their crops. Wipe them out. Repeat as necessary.
You miss the point. The Saudis and Pakis did it, not the Afghans or Iraqis.
Winning the information war is extremely important, both Al Jazeera and Al Qaeda understand that.
If you just allow Al Qaeda (and God knows who in Pakistan)to fill the airwaves with junk, without counteracting, this is what you get.
I come from Africa, and I interact daily with illiterates. The range of crazy beliefs they subscribe to will shock you. So that guy’s response is nothing out of the ordinary.
Following our display, each Muslim nation would have been on notice that their theocracies and dictatorships were to be disbanded within 30 days. Failure to comply would result in the destruction of one city per week (with the same 72 hour notice) until there was an agreement.
What people say they know and what they actually know may be different things, especially if they’re looking to score religio-political points. On the one hand, Muslims deny that Muslims carried out 9/11, and on the other, praise it as a great achievement for Islam.
How many American children know the answer to this question? I have asked several who have no idea what 9/11 means.
This is b/c the Army hasn’t been fighting the information war. We’re all about winning hearts and minds with schools and overblown make-work projects, but we haven’t even bothered to educate people as to why exactly things are the way they are in their country. Some (possibly most) wouldn’t even believe it, but a few would, and that’s better than what we have now.
Screw Africa--you could say this same thing about the southside of Chicago.
“I think the Americans did it themselves, so they could invade Afghanistan.”
Believe me when I say that if it were up to me, your country and all predominately Islamic countries would be bathed in the cleansing fire of the atom, until nothing was left but glowing dust and glass.
Nobody ever said that the Afghanis or Iraqis did 9/11. We’re not in Afghanistan to punish them. We’re there because the Taliban refused to hand over Bin Laden, and continues to support terrorist groups and training camps. The invasion of Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11 other than our policy changed after that... Such that we would no longer sit back and watch dangerous men acquire and proliferate massive weapons anymore.
I want so much to nuke that sh!thole.
LLS
Just drop a nuke on mecca and game over.
LLS
Sounds like a DUmmmie.
“I have no idea why the Americans are in my country.”
Right........
Ever think of asking?
The article is puzzling; We....should not bomb Afghanistan, because some of the people there do not know about 9-11..?
Hmm.
That they do not know 9-11 provides a type of DEFENSE? That’s really weird:
That’s like a I have a loaded gun with 2 men standing before me. One understands I hate him, the other does not. And so I swifty draw and kill the witting one, and leave unShot the man who knows nothing of my hate.
See? I still don’t get it.
Why do they need to UNDERSTAND us before we kill them?
“that guy’s reaction is nothing out of the ordinary”
——and as I just learned, but already assumed, it’s shared
by a great many Egyptians.
Dont go tryin to get on my good side.
