"We are one nation. We are one people....
We've heard that before. Sixteen years ago, when we were an editor at City Journal, we worked on an article by Julia Vitullo-Martin titled "Detroit Fights Back." "No American city ever fell as far or as fast as Detroit," Vitullo-Martin began. "But now Detroit is poised for a comeback. Every signal--economic, political, social--is positive." One hopeful development was the retirement of five-term mayor Coleman Young, whose tenure had proved disastrous....
[Obama] parachuted into this city's sanitized, heavily-securitized [sic] downtown square-mile of corporate headquarters and Whole Foods markets - safe from the murderous streets of the city's other 138 square miles that have claimed 250 lives already this year and put Detroit on path for a staggering 50 per 100,000 residents murder rate in 2011....
Meanwhile, Coleman Young, who had been a civil rights hero, deliberately accelerated his city's decline:
Middle-class citizens, white and black, sought the lower taxes and better services available right across Eight Mile Road, Detroit's northern border. White flight escalated again during the court-ordered school busing efforts of the seventies. Mayor Young antagonized whites further by promoting a confrontational stance toward the suburbs--a stance that allowed him to consolidate his political base by fanning the resentments of an increasingly black Detroit. . . .
Many white Detroit business people, unwilling to be quoted by name, look back on the Young years with particular bitterness. Says one, who left the city in 1982: "Coleman was a racist, and he made it clear that white businesses were unwelcome, which meant to me that we would go unprotected. We could get robbed, burned out, preyed upon by city inspectors, and Coleman wouldn't do anything. He encouraged attacks on us. There was absolutely no reason--not a one--to stay in Detroit."

Yesterday a FReeper used the term “Cargo Cult mentality” to describe these people who think infrastructure brings growth. I think its a brilliant description that should be used often.
I know, but if the areas noted are purged, the urban remains might be salvageable after the out migration to the purged utopias
Exactly. I live 70 miles west of Detroit and we’re as conservative as any small community in the bible belt.
That really is a brilliant description. I’m gonna have to steal that one.
Now that the GOP has pretty much full control of Michigan, the leeches are being forced to flee.
In the past year, we killed one 20,000 member union and are targeting a similar union. We cut some 30,000 college students off food stamps, and imposed limits on welfare.
The signs were all there that America haters---Barack and Michelle ----were going to upend the Constitution by executive fiat.
MICHELLE ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL: " Barack Obama is going to demand that you move out of your comfort zones." And on Thursday, November 1st, 2007, Michelle Obama made this startling comment, "We've got to make sure that people who have more money help the people who have less money."

REFERENCE Michelle's Princeton thesis entitled "Princeton-Educated Blacks and the Black Community" and written under her maiden name, Michelle LaVaughn Robinson, in 1985, has been the subject of much conjecture on the blogosphere and elsewhere, b/c it was "temporarily withdrawn" from Princetons library until after the presidential election. Critics, who have read the thesis, say it is the most sophomoric, non-scholarly piece of drivel ever and claim it exposes the lack of academic rigor at Princeton, even over 20 years ago.
EXCERPT "My experiences at Princeton have made me far more aware of my 'blackness' than ever before," the future Mrs. Obama wrote in her thesis introduction. "I have found that at Princeton, no matter how liberal and open-minded some of my white professors and classmates try to be toward me, I sometimes feel like a visitor on campus; as if I really dont belong. Regardless of the circumstances under which I interact with whites at Princeton, it often seems as if, to them, I will always be black first and a student second. "
"[My experience] will likely lead to my further integration and/or assimilation into a White cultural and social structure that will only allow me to remain on the periphery of society; never becoming a full participant. It is possible that Black individuals either chose to or felt pressured to come together . . . because of the belief that Blacks must join in solidarity to combat a White oppressor."

She never changes----still a depressing specimen of the post-modern "perpetual victim" class even as First Lady -- demanding, whining, self-absorbed, self-pitying, and infantile.
You could drop Obama and the cargo cultists in the deepest wilderness of the Amazon basin and they’d want to build an airport as a means of bringing business.
This is true all over the country. The south and west remain more conservative only because they have smaller cities. It's important to understand this, because the problem is not geographical. It's cultural. Cities bring death.
Question: Was Bing at the speech? Obama didn’t call his name out...do you have any info..thnaks..
Kinda funny. Detroit Mayor Dave Bing met Obama at the airport but I don’t think he attended the “festivities”.
Thanks..that’s pretty surprising..that Bing skipped the speech..I can understand the governor not coming...too such an overt political event..but Mayors..even if they disagree with the President...usually want to be there...it’s expected, and since Detroit gets so much $$4 from the feds..do you know if any of the local papers or media noticed/commented?
The kind of utopia you get at the hands of unions and dimocrats.
That is precisely what Victor Davis Hanson said in his latest blog post. The barbarians in his Central Valley town in California recently stole all the bronze plaques off buildings in the town. People are robbing the accumulated wealth of previous generations. He says we are overrun by the Visigoths and Ostrogoths of the 21st century and are definitely on the Roman path. Not just in Detroit, my friend. Very frightening.
Agreed! We know that Obama grew up and spent his formative years in Indonesia, known as Barry Soetoro and was registered in that name and as a citizen of Indonesia. There he attended elite schools until the 6th grade. There he learned to resent America and Americans. Then off to Hawaii where he was influenced by his grandparents, and mentor Frank Marshall Davis -- all of whom were proclaimed advocates of communism and certainly did not instill a love of this country in the young Barry. He only spent time on the "mainland" of America when he attended college. By then his opinions of, and resentment toward this country had been well rooted in his psyche.
No wonder he is disconnected from the American public, the American way of life, and does not have the love for this country that dwells in the hearts of our patriotic citizens.
FYI..see #32 and other comments..
Oh, yes, they did. Coleman's people were the barbarians.
Dave Bing was a wonderful athlete, a businessman, and now a lone sane black mayor.
