Exposing religious fundamentalism in the US
Al Jazeera ^ | September 6th 2011 | Paul Rosenberg

Posted on 09/06/2011 12:26:24 PM PDT by Cardhu

With Representative Michele Bachmann's victory in the Ames, Iowa straw poll, and Texas Governor Rick Perry's triumphal entrance into the GOP presidential primary, there's been a sudden spike of attention drawn to the extremist religious beliefs both candidates have been associated with - up to and including their belief in Christian dominionism. (In the Texas Observer, the New Yorker, and the Daily Beast, for example.) The responses of denial from both the religious right itself and from the centrist Beltway press have been so incongruous as to be laughable - if only the subject matter weren't so deadly serious. Those responses need to be answered, but more importantly, we need to have the serious discussion they want to prevent.

For example, in an August 18 post, originally entitled, “Beware False Prophets who Fear Evangelicals”, Washington Post religion blogger Lisa Miller cited the three stories I just mentioned, and admitted, “The stories raise real concerns about the world views of two prospective Republican nominees”, then immediately reversed direction: “But their echo-chamber effect reignites old anxieties among liberals about evangelical Christians. Some on the left seem suspicious that a firm belief in Jesus equals a desire to take over the world.” Of course, she cited no examples to bolster this narrative-flipping claim. More importantly, she wrote not one more word about the real concerns she had just admitted.

Dominionism is not a myth

"What In Heaven's Name Is A Dominionist?" Pat Robertson asked on his 700 Club TV show, one of several religious right figures to recently pretend there was nothing to the notion.

Funny he should ask. In a 1984 speech in Dallas, Texas, he said:

"What do all of us do? We get ready to take dominion! We get ready to take dominion! It is all going to be ours - I'm talking about all of it. Everything that you would say is a good part of the secular world. Every means of communication, the news, the television, the radio, the cinema, the arts, the government, the finance - it's going to be ours! God's going to give it to His people. We should prepare to reign and rule with Jesus Christ."

Have at it - check the comments at the link.

Funny, the Al Quaeda mouthpiece is complaining about religion extremism.

Funny, these people never want to talk about Jeremiah Wright and Obama’s 20-year relationship.

Oh yes, the forced conversions, forced baptisms, forced bible reading...oh the pipe bombs and such...oh the misery.

Vomit.

Hmmm, those Christian suicide bombers are so pesky.

>>Pat Robertson<<

Oh for heaven’s sake, so we all are condemned for what Pat Robertson said?

Who is he to me? No one. Some tv preacher. Liberals want to lump my disdain for homosexuals and free sex because of this?

I personally don’t care what they think my motivation is.

Lol. A mormon posting Al Jazeera quoting MSM taking points to slander Christians.

I’ve stood up for mormons in the past, but if you’re going to do things like this, you might find that my position changes rather quickly.

All sounds perfectly biblical to me. And Al Jazeera wants to equate this with suicide bombers and a muslim population that largely agrees with them?! Excuse me while I LOL my rear end off

So how many people have these so-called Dominionists murdered, kidnapped, or otherwise mistreated? Or did they just invite some anti-Christians to a church potluck, thus violently traumatizing the latter?

If they can't show actual evidence of violence or immoral behavior by Christians, then they could show writings from the 'dominionists' demonstrating that it is logical that they will become violent, or that they excuse violence or other immoral behavior as a means to an end. Instead we just get vague quotes about future beliefs, which most Christians believe God will bring about without us lifting a finger.

The Bible, after all, is a book about what God has done for us. Not the other way around. The book of Revelation (etc.) is no exception. Our marching orders are 'love thy neighbor' and 'pray for your enemy' and so on, not the opposite.

Used to be a “Fundamentalist” was a person who: believed in the Deity of Christ,
His Virgin birth, His sacrificial death and bodily resurrection,
in the existence of Heaven and Hell, and that the Bible is the Word of God.

But now the liberals and journalists (same thing) have destroyed the term, and smashed the language in an attempt to smear those they don’t like.

Same with the word “Martyr” which 20 years ago referred to a person who was killed for speaking his convictions, while raising no hand in violence against anyone.

Now the press has simply taken the utterly false translation of ignorant people and flipped it 180 degrees and applied the honorific “Martyr” to people who murder others while managing to kill themselves.

The world of journalism and news editors is a world of sick sick sick people. Did I mention ignorant?

Up until the "Jesus Christ" part, this looks like the ravings of some imam; or a muslim brotherhood wingnut.

Yeah baby preach it! Let’s get out there and EXPOSE those religious fundamentalists. If we don’t, we face chronic high unemployment, massive deficits, catastrophic inflation, high energy and food prices. We just GOT to do something about those religious people!

“I’ve stood up for mormons in the past, but if you’re going to do things like this, you might find that my position changes rather quickly.”

Please understand that a lone Mormon posting a slanderous Al Jazeera article should not be construed to imply that most Mormons agree with what he’s doing. This would be akin to condemning most Baptists for the actions of one idiot, Fred Phelps, of the Westboro Baptist Church.

I think the problem with “dominionism” is in the “when” of the taking of dominion.

The dominionist believes that humans have to take dominion over everything before Christ comes again,

and the biblical believe understands that this dominion will be His after His second coming.

You actually should be looking askance at the first set of folks.
