Rick Perrys record on immigration isnt as bad as I thought. Its worse! Its not just that he doesnt want to build the border fence. Many fence opponents argue (though I disagree) that its far more important to take away the jobs magnet that lures illegals to try to cross the border in the first place. But Perry hasnt supported the quickest, best way to take away the jobs magnet, which is to require all private employers to use the E-Verify electronic check of Social Security numbers. Perry wouldnt even require his own state government to use E-Verify, let alone private employers, declaring E-Verify would not make a hill of beans difference when it comes to whats happening in America today. .
And the fence and E-Verify are the easy part of this issue. They are the stripped down basic package of enforcement provisions outlined by immigration-control advocate Mark Krikorian. The hard part is getting a candidateespecially a pro-business GOP candidateto promise, in a binding way, that in the future he or she wont, under pressure from business and Latino leaders, accept some sort of premature legalization (i.e., amnesty).
Thats tough enough with, say, Mitt Romney: Hes criticized amnesty in the past, but you know there will be Romney strategists pushing legalization as the key to capturing the fast-growing Hispanic vote.
With Perry its especially difficult, though, because Perry has seemingly already endorsed legalization under the guise of a guest worker program (the same trick tried by George W. Bush), Here is the revealing web page:

Sarah Palin on the issues:
Q: So you support a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants?
A: I do because I understand why people would want to be in America. To seek the safety and prosperity, the opportunities, the health that is here. It is so important that yes, people follow the rules so that people can be treated equally and fairly in this country.

Show me that Perry ever said anything like this.
That sentence, “E-Verify would not make a hill of beans difference when it comes to whats happening in America today, was in regard to the hiring of employees to work for the State and was modified by the next.
http://www.politifact.com/texas/statements/2010/feb/01/kay-bailey-hutchison/hutchison-says-texas-state-doesnt-use-e-verify-wee/
“”E-Verify would not make a hill of beans’ difference when it comes to what’s happening in America today. You secure the border first, then you can talk about how to identify individuals in an immigration situation.”
“Still, the state does screen prospective employees.
“Allison Castle, Perry’s press secretary, said: “We use I-9 forms in compliance with federal law.”
“She was referring to the Employment Eligibilty I-9 form from the Department of Homeland Security which must be filled out by the employer and new employees to document that each employee citizen and non-citizen alike is authorized to work in the United States. Employers, who are required to keep filled-out forms on file for three years, are subject to penalties if they can’t produce them upon request from federal agencies.
“Tyler Moran, policy director for the National Immigration Law center, which advocates for low-income immigrants, said the I-9 form, if completed in good faith, is an effective means of weeding out undocumented workers.”
The immigration thing is a real problem with him. And remember how soft bush was? He tried to ram through Amnesty almost immediately in his first term. He might have done it too, except for 9/11.
Kaus is 100% right on this subject. I like his plan too. I also think whatever happens with those already in the country it CANNOT include citizenship or any benefits such as soc/sec or medicare. If you entered the country illegally you can NEVER become a citizen and NEVER get those benefits, even if you work here legally under some later arrangement.
RE: Perry - this is the one thing that can eliminate him imho.
We’ll see what he says about it going forward.
The I-9 Immigration: Proof of Citizenship has been in existence for decades. As a one-time HR executive for a major airlines headquartered in Dallas/Ft. Worth Texas, I can tell you with complete certitude that it is not a surrogate for E-Verify.
This isn’t just a Perry issue. I’m looking for any Repub who is prepared to be unequivocal about the border. As far as I know, none of them have come out in favor of a physical barrier on the border, and that worries me.
Any candidate I support will have to have the grit to come out flatly in favor of securing the border, and I’m going to have to believe them. None of them have come out in favor of the fence and only a couple have come out to back Governor Brewer.
I was willing to give Perry the benefit of the doubt.
I was hoping he had changed his stupid position on immigration. I’m not voting for another George W. Bush or John McCain.
Period.
“Perry also tackled immigration, saying there could be no conversation on immigration reform until the real issue of securing the border with Mexico is addressed. Perry said he favors the use of strategic fencing, important in metropolitan areas, but he does not believe in building a wall, which he said would not be finished in his children’s lifetimes.
Perry said many parts of the border from Brownsville, Texas, to Tijuana, Mexico, are controlled by drug cartels, and it was an “outright lie” for the president to say it is safer than it has ever been. He said the solution is to add more “boots on the ground,” about 4,500 border patrol agents, and to use National Guard troops until the agents can be trained.”

Perry also said that he envisioned citizenship for illegals already present in our country once the border was secured (which he has no real intention of doing). That’s unacceptable. period.
The hordes of illegals have a direct impact on the soaring unemployment rate, which is number two on that list.
“Perry also said that he envisioned citizenship for illegals already present in our country “
He did NOT say that./
Are you saying that you would prefer to have Obama for 4 more years as President, rather than Rick Perry?
Not necessarily. I have already voted for Perry once btw. Having said that, however, I am not that worried about a second Obama term one way or the other, not when I know he will have to deal with a Tea Party HOR and Senate after 2012. and, to be honest, I do like the idea of four more years of bitterly divided government. It works for us and it accurately represents what is happening in America IMO. like my tagline says, it’s all very complex these days.
It’s under #1 - economy in general.
But you are taking it out of context.
“Weâve got a border with Mexico thatâs not secure today. We had another Texas citizen killed yesterday in Juarez. Americans are looking at that and going, Why are you trying to tell us how to educate our children, how to deliver health care, how to do this myriad of things, you know, what kind of cars we can drive, what kind of lightbulbs we can have in our house, when youâre not even taking care of your basic responsibilities. “
“We have a pathway to citizenship in this country today: itâs get in the line and do what it takes to get here legally. You cannot have a comprehensive discussion about immigration reform until you secure the border. Iâve got a 1,200 mile border with Mexico and itâs not secure. We have American citizens being killed, we have drugs coming across, we have illegal immigrations and all types of other human trafficking going on. Our border is not secure because our federal government has been an abject failure at it. “
“Hereâs what everyone should agree on: get the border secure, then we can have a conversation about what type immigration policy we want to put in place. If thereâs a revolving door at the border, your immigration policy is not worth the paper itâs written on. “
.....and also tied to number 1 on the list. If we could get half of the illegals deported our job situation would probably be solved.
