LONDON (Reuters) - Europeans are plagued by mental and neurological illnesses, with almost 165 million people or 38 percent of the population suffering each year from a brain disorder such as depression, anxiety, insomnia or dementia, according to a large new study.
With only about a third of cases receiving the therapy or medication needed, mental illnesses cause a huge economic and social burden -- measured in the hundreds of billions of euros -- as sufferers become too unwell to work and personal relationships break down.
"Mental disorders have become Europe's largest health challenge of the 21st century," the study's authors said.
At the same time, some big drug companies are backing away from investment in research on how the brain works and affects behavior, putting the onus on governments and health charities to stump up funding for neuroscience.
"The immense treatment gap ... for mental disorders has to be closed," said Hans Ulrich Wittchen, director of the institute of clinical psychology and psychotherapy at Germany's Dresden University and the lead investigator on the European study.

It approaches 90% in Washington DC.
Bogus study by the way.
Only 38 percent?
“Socialism is a Mental Disorder”
MS
Sounds like a survey meant to shape public opinion into giving more public money to shrinks.
They failed to mention the number one mental illness in Europe, that is liberalism, and I would venture that the percentage is closer to 99.9%. They all appear totally insane to me. Especially in GB where they let muslims run wild through out the population and go out of their way to kiss their a**es.
just over 50 percent of America had a mental illness spell around Nov. 4 2008.
After I traveled to Europe last year, a European woman friend who had escaped from there 30 years ago told my ex: “He’s gone to Europe? They’re all crazy over there!”
She was right.
Considering The Hundred Years War, the Thirty Years War, the Inquisition, the Napoleonic Wars, WW I & II, I suspect there are times when Europe has had 80 to 90% mental illness, especially if you consider PTSD
It’s a Eurological disorder.
Same here in the States -(see approval rate: Obama, Barack).
Why do I have a feeling when they reference these first 3 cases that they are including the vast majority of normal human emotion. If I am going to be 5 minutes late for work...I experience a little anxiety. Does that make someone mentally ill? If I toss and turn one night...am I suddenly an insomniac.
leftists, dhimmi’s, gays, politicians
The best of Europe always got killed off in war, and this is the result. ALl that sacrifice for nada.
abortion rate?
There is a great comfort and peace in a personal relationship with the creator. When you don't know who you are or where you've come from, how can you be mentally well?
Of course it is bogus. The bogus professions that rely on the DSM need to increase their incomes, so they manufacture mental “disorders”, include them in the DSM, and, presto, they have a code for billing health insurance providers.
They lack a Savior. When the one true God is disregarded a sorts of things bad happen
Sort of a reverse natural selection.
