CCPOA to post properties as collateral, deposit cash in defamation lawsuit

A Sacramento federal judge has ruled that the California Correctional Peace Officers Association can put up four properties it owns, including its West Sacramento headquarters, as collateral for several million dollars it owes from a defamation verdict while it appeals the decision.

But Judge Lawrence Karlton ordered the union to pay $500,000 every three months to a court-controlled account while the appeal plays out.

Karlton's decision Thursday was the latest twist in a federal lawsuit in which a jury decided CCPOA had defamed businessman Brian Dawe and two other people. The jury awarded a total $12 million to the plaintiffs, an amount Karlton later reduced to $5 million.

From a story last week:
The union would also have to put up its properties, including its headquarters, two Sacramento homes and a vacant parcel of land in Southern California.

FWIW, this is the same judge that ruled against the Pledge of Allegiance.
