You guys talk a big game but can’t quite explain why he needs to be there.

Because it is the right thing to do?

Nice try but there is no legitimate reason for him to be there to deal with a common Texas problem.

Skipping debates seems to be a pattern with St Rick.

I don't blame Palin for much but when you are elected to the highest office in your state you have an obligation, in my opinion to fulfill that. I never expected her to quit while she was running as McCain's veep because if she lost she still had a job to do in Alaska.

When she quit and passed the torch to her LT, she had barely even started her work. What if she stayed and fought? When you stay and fight and win you prove your mettle.

Rick Perry has been trashed by every major paper in Texas for years. He took on the Bush/Rove clan, who ran Kay Bailey against him and didn't quit, he fought harder and won by 20 points.

Palin has her role because she has a die hard following who don't see her warts. I see them as well as Perry's but Perry has a record of sustained achievement that Palin does not.

She was treated unfairly by the liberal media but so was Bush (remember his daughters?).

Look I was excited about Palin when she joined McCain's ticket, I wanted McCain to let her loose. It wasn't until I watched Palin's Alaska that my opinion started to sour. Now I can barely stand her because she is no longer the tough Alaskan with the cool husband, she is a smart alec, media hound with the husband who looks like he is tired of following 3 steps behind her. Not to mention her supporters are trying to destroy the Republican field while she plays games. Either get in and fight face to face but the guerrilla tactics are low budget for a candidate who hasn't even declared yet is supposed to be above reproach. She's no Reagan and believe me I love Reagan enough to name my daughter Reagan.

Nice try, but yes there is. Even though we all realize that YOU want to deny that he needs to be in Texas making sure his staff is assisting the coordination of getting relief efforts for these firemen.

That may be true and if it is, it will shake out and he will fail.

Today, he needs to come home, this is where he belongs right now. I will worry about debates another day.

I do think Perry needs to work on debating, I wasn’t much impressed when he debated Kay Bailey and Medina in Tx this last round.

Anyhow, prayers up for all my fellow Texans being threatened or affected by this fire.

Good heavens, in the live thread last night you all were bitching and moaning about him being in SC instead of Texas.

His priority is running for President. He is focused on that and might not even know about this fire. His future is President not governor.

If he F’s up the fire response, or is perceived as insensitive or out of touch, the press will crucify him and end his campaign.

(Look for the Press to compare the fires to Bush & Katrina, for instance.)

Braggadocio works fine in politicians unless you are seen as cruel or indifferent to those who depend on you.

Prayers up.

Don’t count on Perry for anything except to pad his pockets and grab for the Hispanic (illegal) vote!

I am saying that he is busy. He can’t do anything so he is going to continue running for President.

Well that sounds like an Obama excuse....it’s Perry’s state...he’d better at least address his people for crying out loud!

But in Alaska is where her original battle was left undone. She was taking fire from the locals. She didn’t fight, she left her Lt. to do that.

You all is generally speaking for southerners. I was posting about the rabid posters who glom on any Perry thread and spew their tripe without using one hint of rationality.

No need to get snippy about it.

You should know better, being in Texas.
The drought has turned the state into a tinderbox.
We are having serious wildfires every day.

Um .... no.

GWB never resigned until he won. Many sitting governors have run without resigning offices, heck our PRESIDENT is rerunning without resigning.

Texas lege is out of session. Perry can walk and chew gum at same time. BUT, he has duties and priorities, and is doing it the right way by going back when duty calls.

“It’s a “people are losing their homes and lives” thread.”

NO, IT’S NOT. It’s about Perry making a decision that affects the political process...if he stayed at the debate it would have been a decision affecting the political process.

Personally, he’s probably doing the right thing. I’m just pointing out that he’s had a heck of a lot of luck (politically) since turning Republican, and, yea, it really ticks me off.

And by the way, there are plenty of threads about the fires alone...and you sure as heck won’t see me bring up Perry in those threads.

When you're taking fire, you don't attack the craters left by the incoming rounds.

You go after the enemy artillery sites for starters; then, (even better), their infrastructure and supply lines.

Cheers!

Can’t change my screen name. All I can do is say a prayer for the good people of Texas.

I suggest everyone else do the same.

America is “on fire” and need of help. He must have gotten higher orders from Rove or Romney.

I am always amazed by how accurate the Bible is when it talks about not everyone who keep talking about 'God' would go to heaven. Citing scriptures, invoking His name, or wearing religion on their sleeves, and so on. It applies to many situations. People love to talk about or cite famous people like Ronald Reagan. Talk about conservatism. About freedom. And so on. It gives themselves a feeling as if they are the defender or the keeper of faith or the famous person's legacy. In reality? They bring shame to the very person they cite. But, I guess, everything is up to interpretation.

Well said friend, far more people on this forum feel the same way you do, than who dare speak out from fear of being attacked and ridiculed.

Rick Perry is a dedicated public servant who cares about his state. Imagine the uproar if he would have ignored the situation. Especially here on this forum. In the eyes of these hateful people, he would have been condemned even more and accused of using this crisis for personal gain.

This has become a very ugly place to be.

Ok, I think there are around 20 more debates and then at least 3 with Obama and folks here are giving Perry grief for missing today’s debate?

Texas is having a real emergency and Perry should be there in charge. This is a better example of what a real leader does rather than hanging around in SC in order to answer some questions that he definitely will be asked again.
