NW Environmental News: Human intervention; killing barred owls to help spotted owls
The Oregonian ^ | 3/1/2011 | Eric Mortenson

Posted on 09/04/2011 6:55:37 AM PDT by Titus-Maximus

Wildlife biologists are proposing to shoot hundreds or even thousands of Pacific Northwest barred owls as a way to protect the endangered Northern spotted owl. Barred owls are larger, more aggressive and have been taking over spotted owl territory for the past 20 years. The proposal to shoot barred owls is part of a federal spotted owl recovery plan that will be released soon.

Whether to intervene in what some see as a natural competition between species is a matter of hot debate among biologists, conservationists and the timber industry, which argues that we've set aside huge chunks of habitat for a bird that now can't be saved.

Human action has consequences. Here's my barred owl story from February and a couple other odd and cautionary tales.

The Oregonian: Make this call in the wild: Should Oregon shoot barred owls to save spotted owls?

They decimated thousands of lumber jobs and destroyed towns and communities all over Oregon in defense of the Spotted Owl - while the species was dying anyway through the inexorable actions of Mother Nature.

This is the hypocrisy of the envirofascists - they arrogantly claim the godlike mantle of knowing what is best for the planet when their scientific knowledge plainly sucks and American citizens have to try to live in the destructive wake.

They were wrong about the Spotted Owl and they are wrong about killing the Barred Owl.

Now what about the lumber towns and communities that were decimated through false claim of saving the Spotted Owl? How will we get those back?

This nation has to stop envirofascists, because they are ignorant, evil and have far too much power.

The madness of the power hungry Marxists knows no bounds. Make no mistake. These people are Marxists every bit as much as the occupant of the 1/2 white house. They want to control EVERYTHING and EVERYBODY!

More of the Fed govt picking winners and losers. As if nature can’t figure things out on its own.

I see cash and confusion ensuing from this.

The "spotted" and "barred" nomenclature have to do with variations in coloration in a single species. There are three recognized subspecies but if Environmental Fascists had their way each nesting pair would probably be called a "species".

They've been caught 'breeding together" numerous times and have no sense of shame about it.

There's little chance the hunters can limit their shooting to just the barred owls. Given this one last opportunity to rid America of the troublesome spotted owls, the proper Conservative position is to tell them to just start shooting.

“This nation has to stop envirofascists, because they are ignorant, evil and have far too much power.”

The Florida Blue Indigo snake is almost extinct. I asked a biologist friend, why don’t you just capture a few and breed them in captivity and then release them? He said, release them where? Their habitat doesn’t exist anymore. The point is, if you want to save a species, maybe you need a large owl/snake/toad/smelt farm someplace. We’ll keep the biological “diversity” alive. But, let’s face it, we either have economic development and happy, prosperous people, or we have out-of-work, dependent people and a “pristine” ecology. A pristine ecology is nice, but there’s no place in it for people.

Actually, you can’t have the pristine ecology either way. As my uncle points out, 90% of all species that ever lived are extinct. Why are a few environmentalists trying to pick winners and losers in Nature’s game? We don’t know the rules and why should be suffer the costs of these wrong-headed experiments?

The people who would shoot one hardy, well-adapted species to artifically preserve a weaker endangered species are the very same ones who insist that children be taught the concept of "survival of the fittest" to the exclusion of all other theories.

Savage was right. Liberalism is a mental disease.

I guess “Survival of the fittest” is not in the Newspeak Dictionary.

This insane policy is sure to end poorly. They’ll likely end up with no owls in a given area. Next thing you know, that area will be overrun with field mice which will destroy crops, etc.

Since Spotted and Bared Owls are really the same species, this amounts to a form of “owl racism” on the part of the government, compete with a eugenics policy.

“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.”

Let nature sort it out.
It’s called survival of the fittest.
Humans should not take sides or intervene.

Isn’t it funny that those who believe in survival of the fittest the most, are the same ones who make the most effort in preventing it from taking effect?

That was their argument to stop cutting trees.

The Environazis don't particularly care about the owls. Their focus is on the trees alone ~ to the exclusion of all other elements in the environment.

They used these owls as an excuse so they could eliminate employment for working men and women who'd rejected their Marxian drivel.

This is the inevitable result when environmental lunacy is carried to it’s conclusion. The species being “protected” warrants the destruction of anything standing in the way of that goal no matter how insane it is.

Classic left-wing ideology in a nut shell.
