When Rick Perry Praised HillaryCare (1993)
The Atlantic ^ | Conor Friedersdorf

Posted on 09/03/2011 4:15:57 PM PDT by Tempest

So what does a complete review of Perry's record reveal? As it turns out, he sent a letter during his tenure as Texas Agricultural Commissioner that praised Hillary Clinton's 1993 health care reform efforts. "I think your efforts in trying to reform the nation's health care system are most commendable," he wrote. "I would like to request that the task force give particular consideration to the needs of the nation's farmers... Rural populations have a high proportion of uninsured people, rising health care costs, and often experience lack of services." He concluded by noting, "your efforts are worthy, and I hope you will remember this constituency as the task force progresses. Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can be of any assistance."

Dan Amira at New York magazine dismisses the story and mocks the Daily Caller for publishing it. "He didn't even say anything about the substance of Clinton's health-care reform plan," Amira writes, "just that it was 'commendable' to try to reform the system in some way, which is hardly controversial."

I disagree.

Clinton's efforts were widely criticized by Republicans at the time, and the substance of her reforms obviously constituted a substantial federal intervention into health care, the very thing Perry now claims is obviously unconstitutional and ruinous to liberty. (And yes, Clinton's plan did call for both an employer mandate to provide health care and an individual mandate to be covered.)

This says a lot about Texans. Apparently they want a "nanny" looking out for them.

I wonder when Texas became the "Pansy - nanny state"?

Great point. I have never wanted government to "look out" for me. That's a characteristic of liberal politics and, combined with the Gardasil fiasco shed light on who and what Rick Perry is about.

He was doing his job as Texas Agriculture Commissioner.

He was not praising HillaryCare - THE TITLE IS A LIE

because HillaryCare did not exist YET.

He was trying to make sure the task force kept in mind the farmers and ranchers of America. That was his job.

He will not only do his job as President but will do it well.

And he CAN beat Obama!!!!!!!!

He’s the first Republican to beat Obama in the Polls.

Geeze...I started that video but it is all about gay boys. Where did you discover that stuff?

I am beginning to wonder if your hatred of Perry isn't some kind of gay vindictiveness thang.

Let it go boys...there'll be other straight men you can hate.

An attack on our own is a service on behalf of our enemy, Obama.

Quite frankly any attack from our "own" is nothing compared to what Obama and his people are going to do. We've already seen it. In 2008. He even had lawyers threatening the media.

We ain't seen nothun' yet. Obama isn't going quietly or easily.

Perry was a Dem in 1988. He's been a Republican for over 21 years now. Reagan was a Democrat until 1962 and 18 years later he was the GOP nominee. Perry changed parties when he ran for Texas Agriculture Commissioner.

As Texas Agriculture Commissioner Perry wrote, on April 6, 1993, asking Hillary to keep the challenges to rural communities, farmers and ranchers in mind as the task force developed ideas on healthcare reform.

That was just two months after Clinton took office, 6 months before Hillary's healthcare congressional testimony and 8 months before a bill was introduced.

He was doing the professional duty of the office to which he was elected. It was not advocacy or praise for what eventually came out of the task force or the legislation in congress.

You know, maybe the 20th time someone posts this, the result will be different than the other 19 times. It’s good to have hope.

I completely agree. It's gonna get ugly. And we need to stick together.

Obama IMHO is evil through and through. We need the toughest SOB around to take the fight to him.

And even then, it will be a Battle Royale.

I think Perry is a tough SOB...I think Sarah is also, but I think she need to gain experience.

That said, if the conservative majority decides to get behind Sarah this time, I am behind her 110%.

As I said, I am trying to learn about all the candidates. I will re-read the article and see the strong opposition to Hillarycare~or Google it...Missed its presentation on this thread....***

That said, I did not like the letter and consider it more than pleasantries...that is my opinion. I have not seen his opposition to Hillarycare or national healthcare—I am learning about all the candidates...I know the most about Romney, Palin and Ron Paul as they were in national spotlight.

He may have been doing his job, but I was really busy in the 90s lobbying AGAINST Hillarycare, Bill and Hillary, and I never was a Dem or an Algore supporter. He may be the nominee, but he, like Romney, has a record and it is OK to ask questions about his past.

***Perhaps you can direct me.

if Perry couldn’t see through algore in ‘88, you know he’s not a real Conservative. Perry simply saw which way the political winds were blowin’ after ‘88, & went with the flow.

Really, the only thing I really like about Perry is that he is said to be one ruthless bastard. We need that.
