Perry tells NH no to border fence

MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry says he opposes a fence along the U.S. border with Mexico.

Speaking to hundreds of New Hampshire voters at a private reception Saturday afternoon, the Texas governor says a fence would be ineffective and take too long to build.

The comments, which produced one angry shout, expose a rift with some conservative voters over Perry's immigration record. Tea party activists in Texas have been particularly upset by his steady opposition to the fence. He also signed a law giving illegal immigrants in-state tuition for Texas universities.

I looked at several hundred miles of river and didn't find one single cow ~

But how many sheep and goats did you count?

From Del Rio north, you're more likely to find sheep and goats than cattle.

I think Cesar Chavez, himself, was native born and preferred the use of American labor at a living wage ~ something like that.

Absolutely true.

It’s sure a lot easier to watch a citywide fence for attempts to scale it, than one that cuts across vast swaths of desolate countryside.

Our schools use paper letters, email, text, and phone calls.

They tell us if kids are tardy, absent, didn’t turn in assignments, or if they are rude in class.

So the idea that the kids trashed the notes and they didn’t get to us is bull.

You mean to tell me they do not have pumps and electricity in Texas. Actually I do not think you know one thing about it. The government has been paying farmers to fence their cattle out of running water for years, the pay for installation of tanks, pumps, piping and troughs. What city do you live in.

Is that the image you want for the land of the free and home of the brave?

We start as a police state at the borders, no one in and no one out without permission?

What good is a fence?

There is nothing foolproof about a fence. But no one would suggest tearing down the White House fence just because now and then someone jumps over it.

And as mentioned earlier, the Berlin Wall and the current Israeli security fence are examples of successful fences.

If Israel can design and build a fence that works, why can't we? Others have pointed out that the Israeli fence is rather short.

But Israel is a small country. Small country, small fence. Big country, big fence.

https://www.tsl.state.tx.us/ref/abouttx/sixflags.html

The flags of six nations have flown over Texas. They are:

Spain (1519-1685; 1690-1821)

France (1685-1690)

Mexico (1821-1836)

Republic of Texas (1836-1845)

Confederate States of America (1861-1865)

United States of America (1845-1861; 1865- )

And Cesar Chavez was vigorously opposed by the growers and the grocers.

The battle was mostly over union representation for the dessert grape workers ~ and that was one of those top to bottom deals where you'd pick up the field hands, and haulers, and folks in the terminals.

Both the growers and grocers wanted NO UNION for the sole purpose of not having to hire American workers who really did command a higher wage (because they could go to court and sue their pants off for violations).

The growers and the grocers still oppose any changes in laws that will result in the loss of below minimum wage laborers, particularly from Mexico and jamaica.

Those who object are Texans. We will decide how we will live, not terrorists, not drug runners, not the Feds.

Part of the problem is that the fence is not against and does not follow the Rio. It already cuts of the homes of and divides the land of Texans.

When an invasion is reported, there aren’t enough patrols and they’Great too far away to respond. The fence is worse than useless, it gets in the way.

We need more troops to patrol the border if we’re going to control the border.

If it’s your own boat or plane, you might have a chance.

Any commercial boat or plane headed for a foreign shore is going to check its passengers for proper visas.

Look, the cattlemen don’t drive their cows 50 miles to the river, and then drive them back 50 miles for just a drink. They are smart. They are modern. They know there’s a water table and they drill wells, pump up the water, and the cows get to drink at home without all that walking.

Nothing wrong with mines, you tunnel into one there will be no need to dig a grave.

The main problem with land mines is that we're no more likely to use them than we're likely to dust the border with weaponized anthrax.

Any working solution to the border problem is going to have to focus on targeting the wallets of greedy, unscrupulous employers, not killing destitute workers crossing the desert.

Are we only going to fence off Mexico and Texas? How about New Mexico Arizona and California fenced off from Mexico too? I have seen the New Mexico fence, it is 4 strands of rusty barbed wire on a few leaning posts. How many miles of fence would that be?

The buck stops here. Arizona is stepping up to the plate. Why doesn't Texas?

I hope the AZ law works for them. But I don't think AZ, NM, CA or TX should be responsible for securing the southern border of the US. IMO, it is a primary example of the FEDs not doing what they are suppossed to do because they are too busy doing the things that are not in the Fed's job description.

Do you not think it is the primary responsibility of the Federal Gov't to secure the borders? Do you think the money spent saving GM would have been better spent securing the border?

BTW, my thoughts about all this have nothing to do with Rick Perry and what he thinks or doesn't think! And nothing you say is going to change my opinion!!

The 1200 miles of Rio Grande is different from the urban land around San Diego.

And I have no “nuts.” Numb or otherwise.

Perry is a conservative, and is NOT a RINO! No he is not in favor of a fence, ranchers did not want it because it would cut them off from their property. He did ask Obama for troops on the border and he refused. Controlling the border is a federal function, not a state. Perry can call out the National Guard in an emergency only. He did not favor the Arizona law because the Feds were suing them. Plus it would not pass the TX Legislature. Some of Perry’s actions must pass the TX Legislature, he is not like King Obama. He follows the laws.
