On Race, the Silence Is Bipartisan
NY Times ^ | September 2, 2011 | DESMOND S. KING and ROGERS M. SMITH

THE economic crisis in the United States is also a racial crisis. White Americans are hurting, but nonwhite Americans are hurting even more. Yet leaders in both political parties — for different reasons — continue to act as though race were anachronistic and irrelevant in a country where an African-American is the president.

In July, the unemployment rate was 8.2 percent for whites, but 16.8 percent for blacks and 11.3 percent for Latinos. The Pew Research Center estimates that in 2009, the median household net worth was $5,677 for blacks, $6,325 for Hispanics and $113,149 for whites — down from $12,124, $18,539 and $134,992, respectively, in 2005.

All groups have suffered from high unemployment, the mortgage meltdown and soaring health care costs, but African-Americans and Hispanics started far behind and continue to fall behind. In 2009, 35 percent of black households and 31 percent of Latino households had zero or negative wealth, compared with 15 percent of white households. . .

Political leaders must openly recognize that we cannot progress either by ignoring race or focusing exclusively on it. It is not only legitimate, but also essential, to evaluate policy options partly on the basis of whether they are likely to reduce or increase racial inequalities.

The article is rather superficial because it fails to present a little more detail on the specifics and demographics of the job losses. Instead the article focuses on broad policy positions.

A simple analysis of where the job reductions are taking place, the kind of jobs that are being lost, the local demographics, etc. would lend insight and help explain what is happening.

Perhaps a British newspaper would be a better source.

This is not necessarily about racial discrimination (which probably has little, if anything, to do about it). We live in a society where people are free to spend/save their money as they see fit. If some people tend toward saving and others the opposite, it’s none of the government’s business.

“Democrats mention race as little as possible, even though minority voters are crucial constituents, because colorblind positions are far more politically popular. Affirmative action has been supported in every Democratic presidential platform since 1972, but since the Reagan era, Democrats speak of it less and less. “

All I’ve heard is race race race. Why hasn’t this guy heard it?

It is abominable that liberals are always pointing out that people of color don’t manage to keep up with the rest of us. It is so unkind ans insensitive if them. They out to be ashamed of themselves. So mean spirited.

70% of Black children are born out of wedlock, many to teens and the fathers do not support them.

47% of Blacks do not graduate with a high school diploma.

Unless the Black community addresses these problems which are societal to THEM and must be addressed BY THEM, nothing will improve.

Let me count the ways as to why black unemployment is higher than their white counterparts.

The vast majority of blacks are located in the democrat controlled inner cities with their wonderful educational systems and excellent job opportunities.

Uh, I better not list the other ways, or Rev. Al, Jessie, Maxine. the Black Caucus and NAACP will label me a racist.

EVERY TIME A DEMOCRAT FAILS, THE FAILURE IS "BIPARTISAN".

EVERY TIME A REPUBLICAN IS IN OFFICE, ALL PROBLEMS ARE DUE TO THE REPUBLICAN. THIS IS A LIBERAL THEME.

Hussein is an utter disaster. For two years he and his cabal ran roughshod over the process, inflicting America with disastrous legislation and policies. Those policies are destroying wealth and prosperity...but the liberal media and other Hussein cultists say the problems are "bipartisan".

When REAGAN/BUSH/BUSH II were in office, every single problem, according to the liberal media and the like were due to REAGAN/BUSH/BUSH II.

The bad thing about playing the race game is that you get into the old you can fool all the people some of the time thingy.

Whoops.

I mean national security advisor. The GOP promotes so many people exclusively on the basis of race that it is hard to keep track of them all.
