Albert P. Brewer (1968-71)
In May 1968, Lieutenant Governor Albert Brewer (1928- ) assumed the governorship when Governor Lurleen Wallace lost her struggle with cancer. In his 33 months as chief executive, Brewer established by executive order Alabama's first code of ethics for state employees, decreased the power of special interests in the capital, and formed a constitutional reform commission.

Brewer led Wallace in the Democratic primary but failed to win an outright majority. He then faced Wallace in a runoff. Wallace, running an openly racist campaign that accused a "black bloc" of trying to take over the state, openly slurred Brewer and his family. Wallace narrowly won the Democratic runoff. He later won the general election over his Republican opponent.
