Perry 's Blunt Views in Books Get New Scrutiny as He Joins Race
NY Times ^ | Sept. 2, 2011 | Michael D Shear

Posted on 09/02/2011 6:43:37 PM PDT by Clairity

Rick Perry, the governor of Texas, believes that climate change is a "contrived, phony mess." The federal income tax was the "great milestone on the road to serfdom." And the Boy Scouts of America are under attack by "a radical homosexual movement."

Mr. Perry also thinks that senators should be chosen by legislatures, not the people. And he says that Social Security, the retirement program for the nation's elderly, is a "failure" enacted during a power grab called the New Deal and is "something we have been forced to accept."

When it comes to health care, Mr. Perry writes that President Obama's legislation on the subject was "the closest this country has ever come to outright socialism," largely ignoring the fact that Mr. Obama's plan relies heavily on existing private insurance companies, doctors and drug manufacturers.

I had my doubts about Perry but this article makes me feel better about him.

You should have doubts. The election is over a year off, this is the time for testing the various candidates, both declared and undeclared. If we cannot talk about the various candidates intelligently, how on earth are we supposed to get the swing voters? That means hitting them all hard with some serious scrutiny beforehand.

Now, I like Perry, a lot, and expect him the be the next POTUS, assuming he makes a good VP choice.
On Perry threads though, you know who is the most valuable poster? (well, the one who stands out recently). DoughtyOne, who raises points of concern, debates them honestly by responding to answers rather than doing the cut and paste attacks that get so monotonous. People should be doing that for every candidate - going over them with a microscope well before one of them gets the nomiation.

I expect one or two more to enter the race soon, since, IIRC, the absolute last minute deadline for declaring is 31st October, to file papers for a primary that need to be filed 1st November (can’t remember which one, it is a thread that popped up in the last few days though. Search is being a pain tonight!) That is a bit late to build the organisation needed to win the nomination - with one obvious exception - but the race is still wide open until then.

Perry supported Gore over 20 years ago and they had a parting of the ways. It was after that election that Al Gore started going loony left. He was considered a conservative Democrat at the time. Perry has always been a conservative Democrat then Republican.

This post says it all. You want Perry, you get amnesty. Actually, you want anyone, your probably going to get amnesty. SS can only be funded for much longer by documenting all the underboard workers. Or pushing them back into their countries. Which is going to happen?

I agree with every word he said. Heck, they could have asked me and got the same words.

I agree with every one of those statements, with the exception of his views on evolution.

In regards to evolution, is Perry a "Life on Earth is 6,000 years old" type or an "Intelligent Design" type?

The Catholic Church accepts that life on Earth is millions of years old but the Catholic Church leaves open the possibility of "Intelligent Design".

Specific religious doctrine, however, is best avoided in a political campaign. Discussing it is guaranteed to alienate the 80% of voters that do not follow (insert your particular Church denomination here).

Most American voters view the "Life on Earth is 6,000 years old" doctrine like some FReepers view "Mormon Magic Underwear".

I really do care about either but many voters do.

It’s not Perry’s job to get into academic arguments. His job is to do for America what he did for Texas.

It is disgusting the way liberal fruitcakes use the words “climate change” as if they mean the same thing as anthropogenic global warming when in fact a new ice age would certainly be climate change.

But his words skim over the financial reality of Social Security. Economists of all stripes agree that the program, while stressed, would exhaust the money in the trust fund by 2037. But even then, taxes would pay for close to 80 percent of the benefits currently promised.

Only the doofi believe that one. The financial reality is there is no money in the so-called trust fund. Benefits have to be paid right now by collecting taxes or borrowing the money. The 2037 or 2025 or whatever is a lie just like Perry said. Social Security is in the red right now.

Allow me to add this question: if "economists of all [all?] stripes" believe that, then why was a certain Barry Obama telling us it would stop paying out in 2011 if the debt ceiling weren't raised?

“The statists believe in a powerful, activist central government that advances a radical secular agenda in the name of compassion. They hide behind misguided notions of empathy and push token talking points about fighting for the little guy, all the while empowering the federal government to coercively and blatantly undermine state, local, and self-governance.”

Whose elected officials happen to be the little guys of elected officialdom, come to think of it.

Perry supported Gore over 20 years ago and they had a parting of the ways.

You know who Gore was close to supporting in 1980? Doug Casey the goldbug!

I actually met Al in 1980, when he invited Herman Kahn to debate me before (I think) the Senate Caucus on Technology and the Future. The whole story of that encounter, in four-part harmony, is in my book, Crisis Investing for the Rest of the ‘90s....

Anyway, when I’d met him 29 years ago, he reached out to me. I had just given a gloom-and-doom speech (I was wrong, while Herman, who correctly foresaw the subsequent Long Boom, as he called it, was right). But Al wanted to talk to me, since my views reinforced his own. He’s always been, I think, psychologically receptive to some great disaster teaching us all a stern lesson. The economy didn’t do the job back then, but maybe climate change will now.

Mary Gamarra

“Mary Gamarra was born in Trujillo, Peru, but it wasn’t until she moved to New York that she began to feel the call of journalism. Most of her 13 years in the city were spent learning the skills of the journalistic trade through school and firsthand experience. As a student at Hunter College, Mary studied journalism and literature, which led to an internship with the international branch with CNN. It was there that Mary learned that she could use television as a medium to promote and connect with the Hispanic community.”

Don’t judge me!
