Fox News Poll: Perry Overtakes Romney as Top GOP 2012 Pick; Most Say Palin Should Stay Out of Race
Fox News ^ | September 01, 2011 | Dana Blanton

Even as Texas Gov. Rick Perry moves into the lead as Republican voters’ preferred presidential candidate, a Fox News poll released Thursday shows that voters are more likely to view him as “too extreme” than former frontrunner Mass. Gov. Mitt Romney. In addition, most American voters -- including a majority of Republicans -- think former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin should stay out of the presidential race.

Perry receives the support of 26 percent of GOP primary voters in the new poll. That’s up from 13 percent in early August and enough to edge out Romney as frontrunner. Currently Romney captures 18 percent, down from 21 percent (August 7-9).

No other candidate garners double-digit support.

Palin receives 8 percent and Texas Rep. Ron Paul comes in at 7 percent. Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann captures the backing of 4 percent, down from a high of 11 percent in late June. Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani and businessman Herman Cain also garner 4 percent each. Another 4 percent support former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, even though he has said he is not running and his name wasn’t included in the question. Giuliani and Palin are unannounced.

Click here to see the full results of the poll.

When voters are asked to pick just among the announced candidates, Perry’s receives the support of 29 percent of GOP primary voters, followed by Romney at 22 percent, and Bachmann and Paul both at 8 percent. Romney’s support has dropped 4 percentage points and Bachmann’s has dropped 5 points since the August 7-9 Fox News Poll, which was conducted before Perry officially announced his candidacy on August 13.

What MSM/REP EST pollster is going to allow any kind of a bump for Sarah? I think you are well aware of that, and is why you are suggesting same.

Gov Palin needs to not worry about polls. She can win the nomination and the WH without ever leading or coming close in a MSM poll.

I’ll take that bet. The loser takes a month long hiatus from FR.

Perry already said publicly that he would have a pro-life VP, so that leaves out Christie and Guiliani.

And of course Perry wanted a pro abort president, Rudy in 2008.

If Sarah enters the race, I will support her. But she won’t because of the successful attempt by the DbM to demonize her. She knows Rick is our best hope at beating Obama and that is why she will endorse him as she did last year. Will you support Rick if I am correct?

It’s time for people to take a look at the BIG f*cking picture here, and stop being micro-managers...

Do we all want the most conservative electable candidate put forth? of course.

But the POTUS is ONE man, and what he can accomplish is largely determined by what the make-up of CONGRESS is..want to elect a tea party local candidate? I highly encourage it, and support all in the cause...it means more to the governing of the nation than who the POTUS is, as we’ve seen recently with Obama’s machinations with Congress.

Perry ain’t the cat’s pajamas, but he is more than acceptable at this point to all but the most jaded of political junkies.

I strongly believe the “science” of political polling is dead. I know of no pollster that is able to put bias aside. Rasmussen is a Rep Establishment guy, he has an agenda as do all the rest.

George Gallup was a wonderful Christian man and a pioneer in polling. He is long gone unfortunately!

Frank Luntz tells you what he expects a poll to say before he takes it.

All pollsters do is manufacture opinion. Many people actually base their own decision on what the polling data says

“My crystal ball says Palin is the nominee and Perry is on the VP list, but doesn’t make the cut.”

Then your crystal ball also says 4 more years for Hussein.

What does she got to lose by runnnig...NOTHING!!!

Well, her family has been protection from death threats. I understand her parents had to be protected. She was under attack as governor by people who literally wanted to DESTROY her and when she foiled them at that they attacked her for being "a quitter" - and even Freepers bought that crap. These people want her dead and I mean DEAD. They are demons from hell. They are who is in charge of our once wonderful country.

So what has she got to lose? Everything. She has incredible courage to still fight them. I love Sarah Palin, she is an incredible person, but I fear for her safety thanks to the tools in the MSM and the bastards in the RAT party.

I am saying that she well knows reality and if her documentary gives her a surge, or a boost that can make her viable in the next 10 days of its release time, she may run. There is nothing wrong with Rasmussen polling. It’s record on accuracy speaks for itself. If a surge appears Rasmussen will report it. Count on it. I check out NO other poll, ever. Rasmussen, I check every single day.

My problem with Sarah has been singularly based on the game playing and what her delay has caused. Now that Rick is in I don’t care anymore. But, I decided to give her a break by watching the documentary and charitably concluded she was waiting on this documentary release to boost her poll numbers. If that is not the reason for the delay then I have to fall back into my original position that the game playing is inexcusable. That’s the best I can do. :)

There is a chance we may be within hours of her announcement? So I look forward to hearing that you are dropping Perry for Gov Palin.

If that is the case I may owe you an apology. Mind you, you said some very harsh things about Sarah in the last month. I know because I confronted the other Sarah Baracuda about your comments. She had no idea what I was talking about, I quickly learned that there was more than 1 Sarah Baracuda here... The other Sarah Baracuda, the one that actually supports Sarah Palin, took it in good stride and we even had a laugh over the mistake I made.

but yes I await your endorsement of Gov Sarah Palin once she announces, over the weekend or sometime in Sept hopefully.

If that was the case, then Sarah would live in a bunker in Wasilla. Apprently, that is not the case as she has a new home in Arizona.

Anyone in the GOP will go through hell because Obama is their GOD. Only Sarah has shown the courage that we all need.

What harsh things did I say about Sarah? For the record, I offered to quit using this username to avoid confusion with Sarahbaracuda, but she urged me to keep this account.

There ain’t no way that a 3 term governor is going to play second fiddle to a 1/2 term gov/reality tv star.

Yep, the first time that comparison comes up in a debate....it is game over for Palin.
