Canada amends ruling on Dire Straits' song

CANADA'S broadcast standards council has amended an earlier ruling that deemed Dire Straits' hit Money for Nothing unfit for radio, saying that while the homophobic slur in the song is inappropriate, it must be taken in context.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission had asked for a review of the song after the standards council ruled in January that the British band's song was unfit for radio because its lyrics include a gay slur. The council had responded to a complaint from a radio listener.

Yet how much “music” today contain the N word? And it should not matter the race of the “artist”.

Would those lines in “Money for Nothing” be OK if Knopfler was gay?

Ten to one that was a Prince video playing when the worker said that!

Hot chicks sticking it out and a little faggot millionaire... Sounds like Little Red Corvette or 1999!

Remember when the NBA player was fined for shouting a slur to a fan? My question at the time was would the fine be higher if the fan was known to be gay? Would that be a suspension?

The 'faggot' reference sounds pretty close to what a jealous working joe would say to degrade a guy with make-up, styled hair and earrings.

That's how I always took it. He seems to be saying that you can laugh at those rock stars and call them faggots but they're making fortunes with their acts.

This is why Slash said no to joining Poison before teaming up with Axl Rose.

Not that far behind since it was released in Canada when it was released everywhere else. There are a few oldies radio stations that no doubt play the song on occasion. The album was one of the very early cd releases when cds and cd players were first appearing.

When the song came out it didn’t seem at all odd. Wonder how far Black Betty would get today.

Axel was in drag at the beginning too, but Slash had his own image.

Black Betty was written by a black man (Leadbelly).

Yep. some of the best rock tunes were written by old bluesmen.

“When the levee breaks” is a good example.

Randy Newman’s great for satire. “Sail Away” is such a beautiful song, and then you listen to the lyrics, and damn.

We know that Canada is a bit behind in trends, music, fashion and such but didn’t this song come out in like 85, eh?

So we still have a few years before Canada 'discovers' rap/hip hop and the 'N' word.
