Hoffman is director of the University of Houston Immigration Clinic.

Well, if the director of U of H's legal department dedicated to seeking asylum for illegal aliens endorses Perry, who am I to disagree?

Sigh. I expect amnesty will come up again. Reagan. Bush. McCain, etc. The GOP in leadership does have a history of pushing for it.

Why is this issue so difficult to understand?

The answer is to build a fence and patrol with our military to keep out illegals, and deport all the illegals that are here today.

A MUCH cheaper and easier way to round up and deport all the 30 million illegals here now, is to offer US Citizens a $10,000.00 tax-free reward for each and every illegal caught and deported.

No amnesty. No exceptions to being deported.

Illegal immigration is THE KEY to the perpetuation of the status quo in DC......

You CANNOT..in 2012...run ANY political campaign that is ambiguous about your immigration “position” in the current job market.

Unemployed Americans are looking for assurances of their governments’ concern about THEIR plight...not that of businesses forced into looking for disposable labor because of onerous tax and regulatory policy.

Illegal Labor is the Feds out for preserving the status quo regarding Taxes and Regulation...and is the ultimate litmus test as to the candidates in question commitment to meaningful regulatory and tax reform. If they are wishy-washy on the subject...they have no real intent to disturb the DC status quo...no matter how big their cowboy hat and six-gun.

I don’t know Rick Perry’s past stands on immigration, but if he is going to win the GOP primaries and the fall 2012 presidential election, he has to be firm against amnesty, for border enforcement and for deporting illegals found here. Once president, he better hold to these promises as going soft on illegals just to let some employers exploit cheap labor is a bad move. Legal Americans need jobs and will do a job if not pushed out by an illegal.

There is no way for them to forcefully represent themselves, their interests or to communicate their political will unless citizens and advocates do it for them.

Perry will have to decide whether he wants to continue his bold commitment to bipartisan efforts to making a better future for us all, as shown by his record of support for the Texas Dream Act, or kowtow to anti-immigrant policies that have led us all on the path toward economic decline.

Will Perry's booster squad come along and clarify whether or not Perry will continue his "bold commitment to bipartisan efforts," "as shown by his record of support for the Texas Dream Act."

The voters of American need to know where he stands on all these thinly disguised amnesty initiatives. And now we have a proposal for an "Economic Dream Act".

Perry is pro Shamnesty.

He will not deport illegals any more than absolutely necessary to keep the Bitter Clingers from revolting.

Herman Cain has the only sensible immigration policy.

No amnesty.

Enforce the laws already on the books.

Send them packing.

Hmm ~ maybe we could count them on the way out ~ take their pictures and everything ~ just so a future regime can greet them back, but for the time being they'd be OUT.

BTW, unlawful entry into this country has NOTHING to do with immigration. You need an immigration visa to be an immigrant.

"In keeping with these considerations, I call upon Perry to endorse a new proposal, legislation with political imagination: a new national Economic Dream Act. This act would be a wider and more encompassing version of the previously proposed federal Dream acts, whereby immigrants who have ideas and the motivation for bettering our economy and contributing to our work force are provided a path toward permanent residence and citizenship. I say more encompassing because students and members of the armed services also will contribute to our economy and national defense. In any version of the Dream Act, they must and should be included.

Perry has a great opportunity now. He can take the lead by embracing a national Dream Act, which would reward those undocumented immigrants whose presence here would be beneficial to the economy. Beneficial will be defined, for example, as an immigrant's plan to start a small business, design a new product, register a patent or in some other way materially contribute to our economic growth and prosperity."

More of the usual, and how does one translate this soaring rhetoric into legislation? Even the "pay a fine and learn English" solution was unworkable and unenforceable. It would boil down in practice to just another amnesty give-away with some added rituals.

We could certainly use REAL immigration reform. "Value-added" immigration, like some other countries where an applicant is scored on a points basis as to their level of education, age, health and capital. We could do that and throw the racial quota and lottery system out the window. As for illegals here, now, It's all too easy. Just place ICE agents between them and what they need, i.e., jobs, benefits, housing and healthcare. No need for roundups. Go after the fixed targets. Fine employers, fine landlords, place ICE people at the doors to human services offices, courthouses, DMVs, Social Security offices, emergency rooms, schools, etc.

DO roundup the several hundred prominent in-your-face illegals who think that making themselves media darlings renders them untouchable. I'm betting that a move like that--simply arresting and starting deportation proceedings against several hundred limelight-seeking illegals in multiple jurisdictions--would overload and cripple the resources of the "Immigrant's Rights" community. These guys always pick and choose their legal/PR battles. Force them to fight on a hundred fronts simultaneously.

Furthermore, investigating the more egregious of these "sanctuary" churches and "immigrant" groups would likely turn up all manner of actionable lawbreaking. These guys have been traipsing about their business for years, carefree in the knowledge that the politicians and LEO's were too afraid of the lib media to inconvenience them. Instead of tiptoeing around the media, do the opposite. Make them scream their heads off. Use them as an unwitting megaphone for policy. This game is 95% psychological. If the illegals knew there was a new sheriff in Washington who was kicking tail they would self-deport as life on the lam became more and more unsustainable.

I like Perry a lot, but I think immigration is by far his Achille’s heel. He really needs to “get religion” on this issue.

"Imagine tapping into the creative energies and ideas of these people, bringing them from the shadows to the forefront of our economy and society."

Uneducated and unskilled illegals who made their native countries such beacons for the future and who now try to force America to adopt to their cultures, will lead America into its future?

Imagine a Liberal writer not blinded by their delusions of utopia not leading us to a dystopia!

I have no problem with a guest worker policy, really, I don't.

My policy is simply.

Guests are invited, criminals break in.

Step one-Return to your own country and apply for a Visa.

Step two-Wait

Step three- let the beautiful beauracracy of the government do its magic..............LOL.

You know, there is help available for your problem with reading comprehension. Any number of after-school tutoring centers could assist you.

If you had read the article and been able to comprehend it, you would see that the author is neither endorsing Perry nor claiming that Perry endorses the author's ideas. He is ASKING Perry to endorse his ideas. A very big difference. Are we going to start tarring every candidate with the crazy ideas he/she is ASKED to endorse, whether or not they actually do? Because if so, I'm sure I can find a few ideas that Sarah and Michelle have been asked to support that we would find objectionable. Let's associate them with those ideas as well...
