Carney grants NBC permission to reschedule debate
Washington Examiner ^ | 8/31/2011 | Hayley Peterson

President Obama plans to lay out his long-awaited jobs speech before a joint session of Congress next Wednesday evening -- which happens to be the same night of a Republican presidential debate.

"I respectfully request the opportunity to address a joint session of Congress on Sept. 7, 2011 at 8 p.m.," Obama wrote in a letter sent Wednesday to House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney says the timing of the speech is not aimed at overshadowing the next Republican debate, which is cosponsored by NBC News and Politico, and is scheduled to air at the same time as the planned presidential address.

"It is coincidental," Carney said. "It is one debate of many [that will air] on one channel of many... [and] there are many other factors here" to consider when scheduling a major address from the president, he added.

Carney gave NBC his permission to reschedule the Republican debate so it doesn't conflict with the president's speech, saying "if the network so chose and the candidates so chose" to reschedule, "that would be completely fine with us."

Boehner and Reid have not yet responded to Obama's letter, according to Carney.

There’s this thing called the Constitution...

You really want one man to have all the power?

You’re kidding, right?

Of course not, but a call for a meeting is not having all the power. Somebody has to make the decision on this. I am sure that even the founders would be cool with a person calling a meeting. I don’t think that is too much to ask. The way the Congress is getting, I don’t want President Palin to ask the Congress for a meeting and have the Congress tell her to f off which is about how politics is heading. We can’t always decide things on this current President. He will be gone in either one year or five years and we will have another Republican President who we don’t want to be treated nasty by the Congress. That much I do know.

Well looks like you need to get started on a campaign to amend the constitution with a new clause that reads:

The president shall call Congress into a joint session any time he/she damn well feels like it.

Good luck.

We would be on the side of President Bush had he done this

I, for one, would be just as derisive of a Republican President who tried this sort of heavy handed crap as I am with Barry.
The difference is, no Conservative would try it - even think of it.

To understand it simply review the organization of our government.
Three branches.
Separate but equal.
That whole "checks and balances" thing.

Our government was designed this way for a reason. And he's the reason.
As commander in cheif he does have authority over the armed forces - much as it would gall them a 30-year veteran commanding millions of men is obligated to take orders from this piece of trash of a man, but the leaders of the House and Senate can rightly tell him to pack sand and don't come back.

You're coming at it with an apparent military background. In that environment we saluted and said "Aye, Aye, Sir".
Think of this as one company CO directing another company CO to bring his outfit together for orders. Ummm... sorry, we're busy that day.

Here’s another one who thinks your way off base. Yeah we gotta follow our superiors’ orders in the military but Congress isn’t the military. They are on an equal level as the executive. If anything, Congress should be the dominant branch. He’s not king and they’re not parliament.

-——The President is the senior guy!!! ———

Every morning you must repeat....this is my ass, that is a hole in the ground.

How did you have a commanding officer? How did you get in the service with no schooling? The President has no authority over the Speaker of the House.

I would respect you like crazy if I knew that was true, but you seem to have to demonize every “personal opinion” that I put out there. Sure you might not like what I type on this site, but it is just that a source of debate. For whatever reason I cause some very major retaliation from you that you can’t control so although I look forward to your goal of ignoring me. I know from history that you for whatever reason can’t help yourself in terrorizing me. So until later this afternoon when I type something that you don’t agree with, I will see you then.
