When I had the farm and too many roosters, believe me its not feeding time they are crowing. Its their ownership of certain area's of the farm....#1 rooster that lived in the coop with the hens crowed first. #2 rooster in the far barn would answer, #3 that lived in the pasture would crow his territory, #4 that roosted in the pine trees would crow. Then the geese would honk and it would start all over again with rooster #1. One night they keep up up crowing and honking, along with the dog that barked everytime the geese honked after dark and I sat up in the bed and told myself "my lord I live in a friggin zoo". Got rid of all the roosters except the nasty one that claimed the cook and hens....they usually started around 4:30 until the sun came up...

Oh yea, I had one that had territory ON TOP of the chicken coop. that made 5...

While traveling in Spain, a friend and I stayed in a hotel in the old part of Seville. My friend, being tired, lay down for a nap that afternoon and was kept awake by a rooster constantly crowing from a nearby rooftop. This was in a modern European city of over a million souls.

Most folks don’t understand why people in other countries keep chickens and ducks in urban areas. It is because governments and national economies are unstable. Thus raising your own food makes sense, and during a crisis may be your only ticket for a meal.

I believe more and more we will see Americans raising their own food or buying locally from farm producers. The era of the huge farms employing migrant workers, and then ship produce thousands of miles, is coming to an end.
