Perry Points to ‘Idiotic’ U.S. Rule That Doesn’t Exist
Wall St. Journal ^ | Jonathan Weisman

Posted on 08/29/2011 10:08:06 PM PDT by Tempest

For a small-government conservative on the presidential campaign stump like Texas Gov. Rick Perry, a new federal regulation forcing farmers to get commercial drivers licenses would make a perfect example of Barack Obama’s Washington run amok.

But there is no such regulation.

During his debut in Iowa Sunday night in Waterloo, then again at on Monday at the Iowa State Fair Monday, Gov. Perry brought up the phantom “obscene, crazy” regulation in Texan terms.

“If you’re a tractor driver, if you drive your tractor across a public road, you’re gonna have to have a commercial driver’s license. Now how idiotic is that?” he thundered to the fair crowd in Des Moines, with the rejoinder, “What were they thinkin’?”

Here’s what they were thinking. Earlier this year, the State of Illinois began regulating certain kinds of farmers as commercial motor vehicle drivers, a move that caused a lot of consternation in the Illinois farming community, seeing as it would require stiff new driving tests, periodic drug testing and other hurdles. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration stepped in to clarify whether the states had the right to do what Illinois had done, and on May 31, the U.S. Department of Transportation issued a public notice asking for comment on the commercial licensing of farm equipment.

You also know that Jonathan Weisman is a Obamabot Commie Pinko who worked at WaPo until the WSJ needed an inside man at the WH. Maybe it would be easier for you to get the WH talking points directly next time and avoid the middle man.

You don't even realize that you're actually helping Perry here, do you?

Not just with this post, but you're entire Perry "schtick" is becoming a service to his campaign.

You’re not kidding AAABEST. I’ve been barely lukewarm to Perry so far, but everytime I open up one of Tempest threads, I’m liking him more and more because all of the charges have been B.S. so far.

The Anti-Perry crowd can’t lay a glove on him. Perry has gone up alot in my eyes the last few days (where he had been a 3rd or 4th choice for me).

Perry isn’t perfect, and seems to be more a big picture guy than a details guy (I’d trust Bachmann more to get the details right, which might mean she’d actually make more sense as a Veep doing what Cheney used to do). But in this case he was substantially on the truth.

WTH is up with posting a two week old article as news?!? Don't clutter up FR with old junk.

You guys that hate Perry are trying WAY too hard.

Just settle down. If he is the moron you all insist he is, then it will all come out and he will not win the nomination.

Certainly if Perry is even half as venal as some claim (and privately, I’m a little envious of the guy who reportedly donated $400K to Perry and then got the nod for $25M of state funds to his race track) that will come out in the debates if Herman Cain remains a serious force. If Perry passes the Herman Cain debate test then as far as I am concerned there is no further reason for qualms about Perry.

The proposed rule did exist and was about to be implemented. Rush did his daily 1-minute morning update on it a few weeks ago, and the rule was mysteriously withdrawn the same day!

Farming collectives can’t really happen until the workers are unionized and the kulaks are identified and driven off the land.

The govtmit will help the unions by providing the list of names for initial contact, making the process of conversion quicker and easier.

Cloward-Piven will probably provide the over-all tactics to subvert, frustrate and eventually overwhelm land owners.

FWIW

Thank you for this thread. I don’t have sufficient time to follow the important issues of the day.

I happened to catch something a while back about some proposed federal legislation to regulate or license farmers’ use of rural roads to transport their crops. At the time that I read about it, it had been shelved because of opposition. I considered the story little more than a footnote and went on to other more important stories.

Seeing this story, and some of the comments by our fellow FReepers, gives me insight into Perry and his campaign that may have otherwise required a lot more research on my part.

Perry’s starting to look very good to me. Thanks again for your help.

THis is another time you’ve left off the date on the blog post you are posting. We already discussed this back on August 16th when it came out. It’s august 30th now.

He referred to the requirement in the future tense. There`s nothing “phantom” about that.

Your posts are a joke. I click on them when I want something to laugh at.

It’s OK to be anti-Perry. But your fixation, regardless of facts, is just funny.

It’s no secret that I can’t stand Perry, but unlike his supporters, when the other side has a point, I’m willing to acknowledge it (heck, I just got done arguing with a Perry supporter telling me that Islam is no threat to the West...since Perry had stepped in it on Islam)

Anyway, I was left with the same impression as Perry - the idea being that farmers would have to live like commercial drivers. So I don’t blame Perry here - but I have plenty of other issues to dispose of Perry with.

Yes because I’m the one creating fear by complaining about a non-existant law. Makes perfect sense...
