(AP) LAS VEGAS — A clean energy revolution is under way in the United States but isn't happening quickly enough, U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Monday.
Reid told reporters in advance of a clean energy summit in Las Vegas that the country is still too dependent on foreign oil and needs to change that to help national defense and the economy.
"Our dependence on foreign oil is making our nation less secure, and is certainly damaging the health of our citizens," he said.
Reid said he expects clean energy projects to be part of jobs bills the Senate will consider when it returns to session next week.
The Tuesday summit at the Aria Resort & Casino is expected to include Vice President Joe Biden, several governors and other influential policy experts, including Energy Secretary Steven Chu and U.S. Navy Secretary Ray Mabus.
In addition to lawmakers trading ideas, previous summits have included announcements and discussions about investments in renewable energy.
John Podesta, chief executive of the Center for American Progress, said discussions at the summit have led to tax incentives for renewable energy and funding for transmission line projects in Nevada and elsewhere.

Many third world countries use dried animal dung for heating. Just think of the opportunity for energy savings we would have by switching from natural gas or oil heat to burning dried dung.
The Democrats will not be happy until we are reduced to third world status - and that isn’t going to take too much time if current trends continue.

Reid, you are not part of the solution you are part of the problem. Energy independence is not difficult to tackle. 1) Get rid of the socialist democrats clinging to their AGW carbon fantasy world. 2) Unlease the oil companies to do what they do and produce our own oil. 3) Keep moving forward with any alternatives that make market sense. 4) Vote all socialist democrats out on their rear ends in 2012. 5) Tell the countries we have been buying oil from that hate us to got straight to hell.
And Obama keeps deriding conservative GOP reps for putting politics ahead of country...a bold-faced liar to all the people, all the time surely can't persist.
Geez, even Big Oil can’t keep up with Big Government’s level of bribery.
We make fuel cells, we could never compete against oil, coal or natural gas.
Yes we are the leader in fuel cell production with power plants all over the world but the disclaimer is this; without government subsidies the sales would virtually evaporate, we continue to cost down (30% by may last estimate) but still are not competitive.
Do these subsidies work? possibly, only in the respect that it has allowed us to make the product more efficient and cheaper with time.
The free market should always decide which fuel is the most efficent and cheapest so I have mixed feelings. (I neeed a job)
Reid’s the essence of the hypocritical vegan. Green takes living space out of nature, and it is burning coal and oil which provides nature the means to subside ecologicaly from our consumption there of into a CO2 matter that it can then freely consume.
