"Merced County investigators say the 20 year-old would-be victim pulled out a utility tool and began stabbing the attackers to protect himself and his girlfriend.
Deputies say the four suspects are expected to face charges after they recover from their injuries."

It happened in Merced County. It is two counties north of Fresno. The first county north of Fresno County is Madera County, then comes Merced County.

...the four suspects are expected to face charges after they recover from their injuries. If only those words could be used in the closing paragraph of EVERY story about criminal assault -- what a wonderful world it would be.

I have four of them from the Micro to the Wave. However, in 2002, I was in Bath, England, returning alone to my B&B after a late dinner when two big ‘yutes’ began to follow me. I could hear them walking behind me and getting ever closer. I pulled out my Kershaw (illegal in the UK) and flicked it open. Both characters disappeared when I turned around.

Who?
What?
When?
Where?
Why?
Basic information lacking.
Who? Unidentified.
What? Stabbed after attacking/attempting to rob the wrong guy.
When? Saturday night.
Where? ????
Why? Robbery flashmob attack? Self defense obviously. How what it determined? Based upon whose account?

Surely you don’t expect me to answer those questions. I didn’t write the article. Now, if I had been the original investigative person, those questions would have answered. And yes I know, please don’t call you Shirley.
