Another Texas governor who drops his gs and scorns elites is running for president and the whispers are the same: Lightweight, incurious, instinctual.
Strip away the euphemisms, and Rick Perry is confronting an unavoidable question: is he dumb - or just misunderestimated?
Doubts about Perrys intellect have hounded him since he was first elected as a state legislator nearly three decades ago. In Austin, hes been derided as a right-place, right-time pol who looks the part but isnt so deep Gov. Goodhair. Now, with the chatter picking back up among his enemies and taking flight in elite Republican circles, the rap threatens to follow him to the national stage.
Hes like Bush only without the brains, cracked one former Republican governor who knows Perry, repeating a joke that has made the rounds.
The Texans loyalists reject the suggestion, asserting that it owes to political bias and sour grapes, but Perry himself seems to welcome the low bar. He cracked on the campaign trail earlier this month that the difference between he and Bush was that he went to Texas A&M and the former president attended Yale.
But conversations with both Perry admirers and critics reveal a more complicated assessment about the mind of a politician who has never lost an electionand ranks as the longest-serving governor in Texas history.

*ANY* conservative candidate will be ridiculed as “dumb”.
It’s the rats go-to meme.
No. 0bama is a dope. Liberals are dopes.
But dopes dont know they are dopes. They think they is smart.
Seriously? They are going to start, yet again, with the Republican is dumb mantra. Does it ever end? Do these people ever have an original idea?
Unless the Liberals/MSM can PROVE otherwise, they need to STFU.
If this is the best they have then it’s about to be President Perry.
The sheeple must buy it, or they wouldn’t use the same mantra.
I’m no JM fan, but I think this is a pretty good article. Asks a question that people are asking, then gives a nuanced and believable answer.
Gives Perry lots of credit for having clear priorities, a well-honed executive style, and a very effective approach for a politician.
Makes him out to be a formidable and disciplined political competitor.
Dang! I must be dumb too.
At least I can tell Shiite from donuts.
Obama only drops his "G"'s when he is pandering to the little people.
Leftists generally take a very narrow gauged measuring stick when measuring a candidate and they always lay it only along the horizontal axis: how intelligent is the candidate?
They almost never inquire into the character of the candidate unless it is to destroy it, often on the basis of race. As I have posted, this is why the left is so flummoxed by Sarah Palin who says to them, you are judging me according to a false standard, stop worrying about my syntax and start thinking about my spiritual alignment. Stop judging me horizontally and start measuring me vertically.
So this author goes halfway and he is at least generous enough to grant Governor Perry the right to be judged on his own terms which is whether he is effective in governing, especially in creating jobs.
Better we are unlikely to get.
It's the oldest activist reporter trick.
I think the real test is can Perry name all 57 states.
They tried to label Palin stupid.
The reality is Obama has all his academic records hidden, never ran anything, does not understand economics and can not talk without a TelePrompTer
Rush has called this projecting by the Dems.
The “reporter” is an Obama campaign staffer.
Looking at the photo at the link I see further proof that cousins should not marry.
Jonathan, substitute “Obama” for “Perry” in your article.
What conclusion do you come to?
Politico did not lay a glove on him.
It can slander him all day to the effect that he gets things done, is on top of the issues he cares about, is an effective governor, and wins all his elections. What next, they will not spell his name right?
Oh, the prickers in this briar patch!
