“Senator McCain added nothing of substance,” Cheney writes about the now-famous meeting. “It was entirely unclear why he’d returned to Washington and why he’d wanted the congressional leadership called together. I left the Cabinet Room when the meeting was over thinking the Republican presidential ticket was in trouble.”

The truth hurts. And this particular truth will do for McCain's political epitaph:

Senator McCain added nothing of substance.

I think it was McCain’s chance to feel like a cabinet member in preparation for feeling like a president. Also needed the exposure as a person of substance who could summon all the top names, if even for a senseless meeting. Yup. Any excuse at all for a meeting of the top repubs just to remind the public that he is in fact a republican of substance and high standing. Notice how he even out-paced obammy to get out in front for the photo op. Not nice, Juan, to upstage the prez. Where’s yer sense of protocol?
