It's official: He's broke.
A federal judge Tuesday declared former Luzerne County Judge Mark A. Ciavarella Jr. a legal pauper, allowing him to proceed with an appeal of his corruption conviction without having to pay filing fees and other court costs.
The ruling, from U.S. District Judge Edwin M. Kosik, came a day after Ciavarella filed a handwritten financial disclosure form listing his last day of employment as Aug. 8 - just days before his sentencing - and his estimated income as $2,500 per month.
Kosik sentenced Ciavarella on Aug. 11 to 28 years in prison after his conviction in February on 12 of 39 felony counts stemming from his role in a scheme to pocket $2.8 million in payoffs from the developer and co-owner of the center, PA Child Care.
Kosik also ordered Ciavarella to pay $1.17 million in restitution and said he must forfeit a $997,600 finder's fee he received from the developer of a for-profit juvenile detention center.
Ciavarella's attorneys filed notice last week that they would appeal his conviction and sentence. In related documents, the attorneys revealed Ciavarella's financial plight.
Ciavarella, 61, had less than $300 in cash at the time of his sentencing, less than $200 in his prison account and his state pension contributions are frozen and subject to forfeiture, according to the documents. Ciavarella owns no stocks, bonds or real estate and his automobile is "virtually valueless on the market," according to the documents and Ciavarella's handwritten disclosure form.

So his wife must be sitting in Fr. Lauderdale with a beautiful house and money to burn.
Now would be a good time for him to start filling out a bunch of those credit card offers that he gets in his mailbox every day.
Ciavarella was a typical arrogant, sleazy party hack judge. If I had my way, they’d boil him like a lobster. He is an American example of “man’s inhumanity to man”, or in his case, children. I live in the county next to the Ciavarellas’, and this man is a waste. If he ran tomorrow in his county, however, he’d get at least 1/3 to 1/2 of the votes. Bob
I will give the jerk, sight unseen, 200 hundred dollars for his "valueless vehicle".
What kind of dolt has a good job as a judge, but has no investments in stock, bonds, or real estate?
Screw this judge. He probably has several million stashed in a secret account somewhere.
