Rick Perry, governor of Texas, has only been in the presidential race for 20 minutes but he's already delivered one of the best lines in the campaign:
"I'll work every day to try to make Washington, D.C., as inconsequential in your life as I can."
This will be grand news to Schylar Capo, 11 years old, of Virginia, who made the mistake of rescuing a woodpecker from the jaws of a cat and nursing him back to health for a couple of days, and for her pains, was visited by a federal Fish & Wildlife gauleiter (with accompanying state troopers) who charged her with illegal transportation of a protected species and issued her a $535 fine. If the federal child-abuser has that much time on his hands, he should have charged the cat, who was illegally transporting the protected species from his gullet to his intestine.
So 11-year-old Schylar and other middle-schoolers targeted by the microregulatory superstate might well appreciate Gov. Perry's pledge. But you never know, it might just catch on with the broader population, too.
Bill Clinton thought otherwise. "I got tickled by watching Gov. Perry," said the former president. "And he's saying 'Oh, I'm going to Washington to make sure that the federal government stays as far away from you as possible while I ride on Air Force One and that Marine One helicopter and go to Camp David and travel around the world and have a good time.' I mean, this is crazy."
This is the best argument the supposedly smartest operator in the Democratic Party can muster? If Bill Clinton wants to make the increasingly and revoltingly unrepublican lifestyle of the American president a campaign issue, Gov. Perry should call his bluff. If I understand correctly the justification advanced by spokesgropers for the Transportation...

Has any supervisor of this IDIOT hauled him on the carpet and asked him what in God's name he was thinking of? He wasted public time (= money), he displayed an apalling lack of judgement, and he brought the authority (ies) into disrepute.
Does anyone have any follow up on this?
Steyn is being introduced right now (4:30 pm West Coast) on CSPAN Book TV if interested. Will speak for the next hour.
Saw him say this on Cspan... worthy interview/speech...
If you can watch it on re-run do so... he was brilliant..
Too much content to relate it all... wonderful snark as only he can do..
Yeah, you’d think the various gunslingers still active in these various agencies would not STILL be so tone-deaf as
to try to pull off something like this-—it’s entirely symbolic of the less offensive rules and regs-— somehow it EXPLAINS them, though it will always be explained away as ‘the exception to the rule’.
I went there to watch it but they are acting like this is tv and I have to watch it at a certain time. Is it posted anywhere else so I can watch?
Not so sure what you mean — but it is on again at 1AM west coast time - same channel.
What I mean is, why do I have to watch it at a certain time. Why can I not download it and watch it now. This is computer not tv. Things are watched around the world at different times. It is in the can, why can I not access it? Doesnt make sense to wait for a prerecorded digital broadcast.

In the not-so-old days, persons cloaked with authority in executive matters were encouraged...warned...to use their judicious powers judiciously. Now they’re told to follow orders. Not much discretion championed; liability prevention is king. The authorities have authorities....and they’re gettin’ jiggy with it.
A good description would be “exercising petty authority.”
They did back down and rescind the fine. However, no news about whether the officer who wrote the ticket has been disciplined or promoted.
