California politicians facing reality on economy
Sacramento Bee ^ | 8/21/11 | Dan Walters

Gov. Jerry Brown named a so-called "jobs czar" last week and said he'll propose "a series of things" to boost California's poor economy.

More or less simultaneously, Brown's Department of Finance revealed that revenues in July were about 9 percent below state budget assumptions.

Those assumptions had been suddenly and mysteriously upgraded by $4 billion just before the budget was adopted in June, making it much easier to balance – on paper anyway.

Meanwhile, the state Senate's top Democrat, President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg, declared, "We intend on our own, as the majority party, to do all that we can, to put people back to work."

And on Friday, July's unemployment statistics were released, revealing that California's jobless rate ticked back up to 12 percent.

It's still second highest in the nation behind Nevada. In many rural areas, unemployment is in the Great Depression range, topped by a whopping 30.8 percent in Imperial County.

It means that the California economy is still mired in recession and that the state budget's rosy revenue scenario is probably not going to become reality.

New taxes and regulations will surely bring back all those lost jobs, won't they?

We will hear much from Brown and others about simplifying California's very dense regulatory thicket, but the rules that business executives most decry are bedrock issues for Democrats and their allies in labor unions and environmental and consumer activist groups.
That is the ONLY reality that matters.

Jobs czar, pfft. There is no reality going on with California politicians. More of the same old failure as unemployment rises.

For the past nearly 40 years, I have watched California fall from the NUMBER ONE position in all important measures amongst the states. I recall, back in the early seventies of reading headlines about the governor and legislature (both conservative) fighting about how to RETURN a billion dollar tax surplus to the taxpayers!!!!

Best schools, best government, no debt, job and high tech center for the nation, and a demographic of REAL CITIZENS, and reasonable taxation and regulation.

Sad situation now. A liberal dung heap of financial disaster, demographic disaster, and key employers and people leaving the state like never before. And the libs just want to raise taxes and regulate more. Well the electorate asked for it and they got it in the last election. More of the same — the illegals are happy with the New Mexico in Los Angeles, state running out of water, and business in the tank.

Stupid is, as stupid does. Thank You Jerry Gump.

We will, in brief, hear a lot of words from politicians about fixing California's economy.

How about....

“A series of things” to boost the economy? Oh, that’s Democrat for “Let’s get someone else to pay. Gimme some federal money!”

but the air is the cleanest it has even been. :-}

when they dig up the relics of this age, the question will be .. why? why would an energy rich state choose to pander to the wishes of a few who choose to live like cavemen and still expert ‘caviar’ services?

Darrell's idea of that is to hire more bureaucrats.

Play the Prop-13 card, Governor. All the state’s major newspapers will join in. You and the Dims are off the hook — it’s the fault of those who don’t want to “pay their fair share.”
