GOP presidential candidate Rep. Michele Bachmann on Friday stood by her promise to bring gas prices down to around $2 a gallon if elected.
The price of gasoline the day that Barack Obama took office was $1.79 a gallon. If the price of gasoline was $1.79 a gallon just two and three years ago, certainly we can get it back down to that level again. Why wouldnt we be able to do that? Were a can-do America, the Minnesota congresswoman said during an interview on the Washington Times-affiliated America's Morning News radio program.
The $2 gas promise raised eyebrows around the country, but the tea party-backed candidate who won last weekends Ames Straw Poll wasnt backing down.
What Barack Obama has done is lock up Americas eneregy reserves. Were the No. 1 energy-resource-rich nation in the world. We have more oil in three Western states in the form of shale oil than all the oil in Saudi Arabia. That doesnt include the Bakken oil field in North Dakota or the eastern Gulf region or the Atlantic or the Pacific or Anwar or the Arctic region, she said.
We also have a brand-new natural gas find in Pennsylvania with over a trillion cubic feet of natural gas. We also have 25 percent of all the coal in the world. We just arent accessing or utilizing our energy. Energy could be one of the most stable, accessible forms of resources for business in the United States. And we would create millions of high-paying jobs instantly, she said.
Mrs. Bachmann, 55, blamed presidential policies, including stimulus programs supplemented by the Federal Reserve, for high gas prices and the shortfall in domestic supply.

Can be done with natural gas....
Yep, all we need is the political will to do it.
She cannot will the price of something to drop to $2.
Please tell me she didn’t say “millions of high paying jobs”...
Somebody should remind the media about Obama’s many pledges....
You mean like the one where he promised that Energy Prices would SKYROCKET?
I wish she could, but that really isn’t within her power.
That is one pledge that the guy will probably keep.
No. But as President, she can UNLOCK America's energy reserves, which should cause the price of the fuels we need to drop. That and getting rid of these stupid CAFE standards and EPA regulations that have not saved one life or one drop of gas yet.
As much as I would like to see $2.00/gal, that sounds like goofy (if not outright looney) thing to say. Promising a market price from a Government position is not what I would expect from a Republican, much less a conservative. There are world economic factors at play (not just the U.S. economy) that determines the price of fuel. It’s a legitimate goal to bring down the price of fuel, but throwing out prices is not logical.
Those evil speculators will take care of the rest
Drill baby drill would not affect oil prices for too many years to meet her stated deadline. The most likely avenue is if the Libya mess ends soon and they get back producing in the next year. Unfortunately, after giving O so much grief about Libya, it would be hard to claim that one as a conservative win.
As would removing the blend laws and Ethanol subsidies, licensing some new refineries and dissolving the EPA.
Oil is hedged way into the future: a known change in supply in (say) 5 years affects prices right away.
A Conservative President and House can do this.
But wouldn’t our oil go into the global market?
With enough spending cuts against all levels of the various anti-competition offices in government, it could be done. There wouldn’t be many left with incomes enough for buying fuel for a while. But no one in politics has the guts or selflessness.
Besides, it's not like she promised that unemployment wouldn't go above 8% if she was allowed to borrow trillions in foreign $$$ for her economic stimulus plan.
