US Troops May Stay in Afghanistan Until 2024[America would be "a guest" on Afghan bases]

America and Afghanistan are close to signing a strategic pact which would allow thousands of United States troops to remain in the country until at least 2024, The Daily Telegraph can disclose.

The agreement would allow not only military trainers to stay to build up the Afghan army and police, but also American special forces soldiers and air power to remain.

The prospect of such a deal has already been met with anger among Afghanistan’s neighbours including, publicly, Iran and, privately, Pakistan.

It also risks being rejected by the Taliban and

I can't possibly catch every news story --but I read this first in the UK Telegraph. Posted it as thought someone else may have missed "the plan" or that we were "close to signing a strategic pact".

Our politicians don’t have the will or backbone to fight for victory.

It’s time to get our troops out and stop the dying.

World War II lasted less than four years for the USA and we have been in Afghanistan for almost ten years. Yet with all the money, manpower and war material poured into Afghanistan in that time we still do not dominate.

There is no way a severely downsized American military could maintain a meaningful presence in that cess pit.
Without sufficient numbers on the ground and overwhelming air support they would be reduced to just staying alive and hanging on by their fingertips.

World War II was a no-holds-barred war to the death. Each side used all the force they could bring to bear in every encounter. It was win or die.

Post WWII rules of engagement supposedly make war "Humane", with the supposed intent of reducing damage, death and casualties but have the effect of making conflicts less decisive and making war more bearable for both sides.

Once you communicate to an enemy combatant that you will not use overwhelming force to crush him, that you will grant him the use of sanctuaries, not firing at him if he hides in a mosque or among non-combatants, you have given up on winning. War then becomes a test of perseverence and endurance and our politicians don't have the backbone for either.

If they stepped back, told our military to win and win fast, and gave them the freedom to do so we would have completed the mission years ago.

You cannot conquer savages with Marquis of Queensbury rules.

In 50 years, the wild west was largely tamed. And if we annexed Afghanistan and then opened it up for settlement, with every American getting a modern version of “40 acres and a mule”... well, 50 years would have that piece of land our newest American state.

Of course, 80-90% of the Afghan peoples would be killed off by our settlers, with the rest living in reservations, but hey... if you can’t adapt, you die.

I hear you with the overseas tours. I’m Air Force and have 6 currently... and once I finish up this one in October, I’ll have my 7th. (and that’s with 15 years in, or roughly one tour every other year)
