Rick Perry's Gaffe Problem
US News ^ | 8/18/11 | Kenneth T. Walsh

Posted on 08/19/2011 2:42:11 PM PDT by HerbieHoover

Perry's announcement speech got positive coverage, but the media's approach has been growing increasingly negative. Perry has been very visible, voluble, and controversial, and the media have been portraying him as something verging on a loose cannon.

One example was his response to a question about whether President Obama loves his country. Perry said the questioner would have to ask Obama--which left the impression that Perry has doubts about the president's patriotism.

Another example came yesterday, when Perry called global warming "a scientific theory that has not been proven and from my perspective is more and more being put into question." This brought derision from John Weaver, a senior adviser to GOP presidential candidate Jon Huntsman. "We're not going to win a national election if we become the anti-science party," Weaver told the Washington Post.

His biggest gaffe was his comment that Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke might be guilty of "treasonous" behavior for how he is handling economic policy....

Even Fox News commentator Karl Rove, the former political strategist for President George W. Bush (a former Texas governor who named Perry as his lieutenant governor), said Perry seems unpresidential and needs to choose his words more carefully....

He'd better get his message under control, or he's going to flame out like Newt did.

The speak your mind side of Perry is one of the benefits.

We don’t need another nuanced teleprompter reader pretending to lead.

I don’t like Perry, but I have no problem with any of those answers. I guess we aren’t allowed to have our own opinions anymore if they don’t jibe with the “accepted” ones.

This is not a gaffe.

There are a lot of us who like the fact that he’s telling it like it is. No more cowtowing to the establishment.

If Tokyo Rove and the MSM don’t like what he’s saying, then I suggest he keep it up!

This article is Horseshit, and anyone suggests that a candidate not speak his mind in telling the truth is working for Obama. As for the comparison to Newt, it’s ridiculous

What "messaging" would that be?

He said global warming is BS. Creationism is okay to teach. And not sure how much Obama loves America (ask him).

Sounds good to me. Would you rather have the mealy mouth RINO speak?

If they don’t want to hear his answer then they shouldn’t ask him the question.

Newt made an incendiary comment about Ryan’s Medicare Reform Plan. It gave the Dems a hammer with which to beat up Paul Ryan. He hurt his own side with his ill-chosen words.

That has nothing to do with Perry’s statements on these various things that have come up.

So far, I have no problem with them.

Rove/Weaver et al might want to consider that people might be sick and tired of politics and politicians as usual, instead of advising Perry to become more like what people are sick to death of.
