American Axle to Close Plant in Blow to UAW (Unions strike again!)
The Wall Street Journal ^ | 08/18/11 | Jeff Bennett

Posted on 08/18/2011 2:05:10 PM PDT by TonyInOhio

DETROIT–American Axle & Manufacturing Holdings Inc. dealt the United Auto Workers a second blow Thursday by announcing the closure of its New York gear-making plant after union rank-and-file members failed to ratify a new contract late last month.

The Cheektowaga plant, employing about 100 hourly and salaried workers, will be shut sometime after Feb. 25, American Axle spokesman Christopher Son said. The announcement comes a month after the company said it will close its Detroit plant after workers there failed to agree to wage cuts. That closure will throw about 300 people out of work.

You people are clueless

The auto makers are still paying thousands of workers to sit in "rubber rooms", some of them making more than $100,000, to do nothing. The UAW takes a chunk of their "money for nothing", and spends it to elect Democrats.

Who is clueless, here?

If the nature of the job is such that somebody can come off the street and do it well enough to justify the wage, then so be it. The job belongs to the employer, not the employee.

“After 3 years the company wants more, workers already gave back 50%.”

Added costs of Democrat Gov Regulations.
Added costs of Obamacare.
Etc....

When other costs rise, wages are the only variable cost left to go after.

Yeah, well now they've "given back" 100%.

On February of 2008 reality set in.

They got to keep their jobs and continue to put food on the table.

Could have had a plant closing then.

Management protected their jobs for another 4 years.

That is 96 paychecks that they wouldn’t have had.

That is 4 years more than if the union had not agreed to the pay cut.

Will you all not be happy til all ‘workers’ earn a buck an hour?

Why the scare quotes around 'workers'? Would you rather they be referred to as "the proletariat"?

Management and ownership are 'workers', too. They invest their time, energy and money in the business, as well. They don't owe the 'workers' any more than they can afford.

Personally, I'll be happy when all well-run companies make a profit and their 'workers' are paid appropriate to their services. Or better.

And we're done with this class warfare bullshit.

You people are clueless.

Somebody is, that's for sure.

LOL!

Yep, we're at Third world status: most third world employees are as well educated and have a better work ethic than your average union goon.

And they will happily work for much less than $14/hr.

Why do these bums think they're entitled to some wage, just because they live in the US?.

Anything that can destroy unions is great in my book. Unions have destroyed America. It is payback time.

You’re probably quite content to pay $1.99 at Walmart for a shirt made overseas at some sweetshop. Just wait until cuts sweep in and affect you. Your mindset will change.

You’re probably also very happy to see your dividends go up because joeblow manufacturing just closed down its US plant and moved everything overseas, increasing their projected earnings.

Yea buddy, it’s all about you isn’t it !

I work for a 40B company and we sell product world wide.
90% built in the USA.
Unions would destroy us if it ever got implemented here.

Guess I’m not totally clueless. I DID leave MN 30 years ago because your average MN thinks High Tech is having a car which starts at -20deg.
